2026 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

Generally, when we've seen good players traded, even for what seems to high price... it's usually worth it. I trust in Hughes to make a good call.

Our core is young, but windows tend to close a lot faster than you expect. You need to fill those holes sooner than later. I'd rather "overpay" if it makes you a contender now. Within reason, of course.

We need a strong 2C. Pay the premium and move on. Hughes is good at collecting assets when he needs them.

Tired of retreads.

Yep, we don't need a Dach/Newhook/insert name of cheap potential. We need as close to a sure thing as possible. If it can be a guy just turning 27 with 5 more years with a reasonable $8M contract like Thomas, that's ideal. You pay a premium for that.

I don't want to trade away Hage, but ultimately, if he has to be involved, then so be it. You don't "NEED" Hage if you have Thomas. Hage is far from a sure thing to be a 2C.

Sound like he's not available... but you can try to make him available.

There's definitely a little risk to it... but it feels like a pretty good gamble. If it's in the $8m range it feels like a bargain. Of course, 8 years for a 30-year-old is a bit scary, but that's future Leafs' problem.

He was so good this year that it just doesn't feel like a fluke.

Elite goalie market is thin but weird. So Hellebucyk has a lot of value, I guess, but it seems hard to evaluate in terms of fair return? I dunno.

Thomas will cost a Dobson range deal. Maybe a tad higher. I still pay it.

Hischier will be less and rumors are that he wants out.

It’ll cost more. Dobson price was reasonable because he had leverage and MTL was his preferred destination

Yeah most deals involve risk. It’s why you and I are comfortable swinging for Petttersson because there’s also a risk in doing nothing while other teams get better

He might be an exception, to some extent.

NMC for another year. Modified NTC thereafter. So, he has leverage now but not as much if Winnipeg waits a year.

Could get ugly, Peg needs a return.
