2026 NHL UFA/Trade Thread

As Down Goes Brown aptly pointed out, Larkin asked for a trade because Red Wings aren’t good enough, but the Red Wings aren’t good enough because Larkin is their first line center.

Larkin needs to find a team that will recognize him as merely a support player

This is a vicious ironic circle at its best.

They had multiple chances for 2-3 years to make the playoffs but choked down the stretch

Larkin , DaBrincat , Seider , Raymond is a good enough start for a playoff berth

Isles and other teams with limited talent have done better
 
DET was ahead of us 2-3 years ago and f@cked it up with stupid contracts. The trades they made during the most recent deadline were just terrible.

That’s on Yzerman or ownership, if they were impatient.
 
WIngs were ahead of us but our version of Larkin kept getting better and is now a two way 90-100 pt Selke winner

Is Aho substantially better than Larkin?

Not in my opinion - other than as a 19yr old at World Championships Aho hasn’t been particularly good in NHL playoffs, Olympics or WJC.

IMO Larkin was one of Team 🇺🇸’s best players last Olympics & 4 Nations

Both are very good 2Cs on contending teams

Aho was a 1C on the Cup winner . . . unless I was just dreaming. There are different ways to skin a cat, as they say.

He didn’t play like one though. Sometimes you win the cup even when your first line centre is 6th in team playoff scoring.
 
Old New about Hughes. He said it numerous times -- he calls about players he's interested in.
