Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I believe this is the year of Frenemy’s demise. Habs in last place, Leafs win cup, and all the teams he said were way ahead of us in their growth go into the toilet. His favorite comparable is the Isles because they got Lou (the true architect) while we got stuck with Dufas, and they lost Tavares but got way better which made Tavares the worst captain in the league. So the Isles aren’t going anywhere but down.

I’m already planning Frenemy’s funeral procession on the day of the parade, so if anyone wants to join just let me know.
with the procession going in the opposite direction of the parade on the same route, of course.

How can Dreger be an 'Insider" with supposed "great" hockey knowledge and be shocked at the Habs struggles? Helen Keller saw this coming.

No one has depth. Cap doesn't let good teams have talented depth. You max out your cap with the best lineup and hope the injury monster doesn't bitch slap you.

16. As for McDavid, there’s a concern about in-arena attendance -- and not just in hockey. I don’t think we really understand yet where this is going, but it’s clear that fans are not returning in-person at the anticipated level. During the 2005-06 lockout, the NHL took a long look at its on-ice product, a move that wasn’t universally praised at the time, but history judges very favourably. I’ve said it many times, I think McDavid deserves many, many more calls against him than he gets. He’s a mugging victim every night. The question I’d be asking if I was the NHL is this: if we want to get more people into the building, are we going to have to give our fans reason to believe star talents will be given more of an opportunity to succeed? I know it’s sacrilege, but if I was concerned about the business, I’d be making sure this was a talking point.

Thank fuck people are starting to talk about this. In true NHL fashion, a couple of years after the problem became cancerous.

Now, of course this would help McDavid and I don't care if they only talk about it helping McDavid...but it would likely help the Leafs more. Over the last 3 seasons, Edmonton is 20th in penalties drawn while being 22nd in puck possession. The Leafs are 28th in penalties drawn while being 9th in possession. The only teams to draw fewer penalties than the Leafs are the 25th, 26th, and 29th ranked possession teams over that period.

And yeah, it's criminal that McDavid only draws .59 penalties per 60 minutes played on 52% of puck possession....but we have a guy, also a centre drawing .51 penalty calls per 60 on 54.5% possession. Big kid with a bad mustache and a goofy arm sleeve tattoo. Nice shot though, maybe they've heard of him.

Fwiw, Marner somehow draws fewer than either with .45/60

Betteman has to be fired to have this happen. He doesn't have a fucking clue how to promote the game. He thinks hooking and holding is ok because that helps with "Parity". The guy is obsessed with that. He loves when an underdog can hook and hold on their way to a successful playoff run.

What's odd is, Betteman is originally an NBA guy and can't understnad the way they promote their stars is the way a league should go.

And none of this "That's the Playoffs" horseshit I've heard since I was a kid. That makes zero sense.

"Parity" = owners all want an equal shot at play-off revenues

And they want that equal shot without having to have the bother of running their organization well, or hiring competent management teams. After all, an NHL team is just supposed to be a fun toy for its owner, not something you should have to work at!

Reality is, that even if the rulebook was called - the refs would do their best to equalize/manage the games with a lot of chintzy calls going the other way. It's the illusion of "parity".
