The NHL Has Never Been For Black Players Like Me

Nice article touching on some themes we have previously discussed. Written by the fifth ever Black NHLer.

The NHL is a conformist league. It is governed by written – and, often, unwritten – rules, protected by purists who cling to tradition. Many of those purists are actually the players themselves, who keep people in line on the ice. But the funny thing about those guardians of the rules is that often they can’t explain why certain practices exist. Here’s one example: Who was it that ratified the new scoring celebration that today’s players robotically perform? It’s different from the approved ritual I’m familiar with, which was just to raise our sticks. But now, the unofficially-officially endorsed celebration is to execute a bench fly-by and bump gloves with watching teammates. Be careful not to smile too much, though – smiling is frowned upon.

Honestly, that clip gets worse and worse with each passing year.

Even aside from the “plays the white way” Freudian slip, that commentary is one long codeword-packed speech saying “this player acts like they come from a different cultural background than the prototypical white, laconic farmboy hockey robot from Saskatchewan that I want every player in this league to be, and it makes me uncomfortable”.

This is the underpinning motivation for my general defence of players who don't fit in and why I defended Evander Kane for so long. So much of the criticism is just noise about them being different.

the difference was that evander was a general douchebag. But I do agree some of the negative press had racial undertones. No question about that.
 
Yeah I wouldn't compare the PK stuff to the Evander stuff. A lot of Evander's shit is beyond legitimate. PK's has always been purely about race.

At this point, even if there's an alternate explanation, it's not worth the circus. Even the stuff that I think isn't necessarily about "character" (gambling, etc) points to dude being too complicated to bother with in light of the covid lying and what this video really appears to be.
