Boudreau’s a good coach, but when Benning gets to keep his job, and the obvious intent of this hire is the continued quest to “win now” with this Canucks roster…

Just my speculation but I think this move has at least partially made by the owner Francesco Aquilini. He thinks he's Jerry Jones. But unlike Jones who actually played football in college (and was fairly successful at it), Francesco's actual hockey experience is this:
Benning stays as GM because he knows to say what words the owner wants to hear. Probably got mentored by John Weisbrod in that regard.

X-mas comes early for Canuckfans. Especially the news John Weisbrod is out. Course, they miss out on hiring Jeff Gorton.
But they seem to do these things half-ass backwards. You hire the GM first & let him hire the coach. I'm guessing the first person they asked for the GM gig turned them down.
