Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I can see why Holland thinks this is the right fix, though. With that hilarious off-season quote that was posted earlier where he proudly lists all the shitty players he’s added, he clearly thinks he’s built a great team.

Though you’d think that if he had an ounce of sense, he’d look at replacing Koskinen first, instead of his coach. It’s not like Koskinen is one of his guys, and although he’s absurdly overpaid, he’s also on an expiring deal, so moving on wouldn’t be impossible.

Honestly I don't think they should be scapegoating goaltending. It's been below average but not terrible, even though Smith has been out all year.

Toronto is not hiring Babcock again

My point wasn’t that their goaltending should be a scapegoat for their problems.

Just that replacing Koskinen with a better goalie would have more of an impact than replacing their coach.

It's still kinda astonishing looking at Auston's last full year with Babs.

toi 18:33 pp toi 2:34

like maybe this is a great move for anyone hoping to see Connor leave Edm.

I’d love to get a peek into the alternate timeline where Auston didn’t spend his first 3+ seasons playing for a coach that kept stubbornly giving him 2nd line ice-time, and where a pandemic wasn’t fucking up his prime seasons.

We’ve missed out on some seasons with historic goal-scoring numbers, I think.

I guess I took the post as needing to dump Koski when he's not awful imo. They dumped Talbot and he's a good goalie.

But sure yeah adding a better goalie would help - I'm just pretty sure they'll make any goalie look worse than they are.

Just to quickly rough out what his scoring numbers could/should have looked like in proper non Babcockian usage, based on his per minute scoring and assuming 2 more 5v5 minutes and 1 more PP minute per game:

Rookie season: 48G in 82gp
+1: 40G in 62 gp (53G pace)
+2: 44G in 68 gp (53G pace)

He's played a decent amount of minutes since Keefe got here:

+3: 47G in 70gp (55G pace)
+4: 41G in 52gp (65G pace)
+5: 20G in 27gp (61G pace)

This scales up again if he gets Leon & Connor 22-23mpg usage and heaven for fucking bid we got a whistle like they do and his PP time spiked up to what they get. Auston & Leon have near identical PP G/60 over the last 3 seasons but Leon 150 more PP minutes. That's 10 more goals right there.

One thing I’ve noticed when watching the Oilers is their defence play “defence”/forward, but the forwards almost solely play forward and rarely help out on the back end.

They play like we used to. Forwards constantly cheating up ice and providing minimal or fuck all back pressure. Look at Connor chasing Willy the other night. Fastest guy in the league and he barely made Willy's trip through the neutral zone difficult, and then stopped skating entirely to let Tyson Barrie of all people make an attempt and stopping him. A few seconds later we had 2 guys open in front and Rielly makes it 4-1.

I don't know what to say about that Kadri trade. At the time, seemed like a steal, to drop suspension-lover and pick up a kid who looked like he could match his production, and a dman who had the potential to be an offensive force.

I like Kerf and think he's a good player, but obviously Kadri has been impact level for the Avs, yet still loves suspensions. Barrie was up there with Beauchemonkey as one of the worst I've ever seen play D for the Leafs and helped cost us that Columbus series.

Avs won the deal, and didn't really lose much, the only downside being maybe only having Kadri through this season and c'est fini while we still have Kerf. I guess the takeaway is that Kadri still had to go, but Dubas should've gotten a lot more for him. But then again, if what he was going to get was Brodie, who we got for free a year later anyway, then you can sort of look at it like we got Kerf and Barrie for free instead.
