Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

media has it completely wrong as per usual.

it's right in front of their noses in a nice easy to understand counting stat -- the Leafs are dead last in blueline offence.

but what do they talk about? toughness, and grit.
give them 18 months and they may start figuring it out.

what's funny is that they don't even realize that Bogosian was the leafs' biggest blueline defensive liability in the playoffs last year. they keep saying we miss his toughness yet our 3rd pair and PK have been much, much better without him.

Who else did Jonas mention in his article?

The options Jonas seemed highest on:

Scott Mayfield
Artem Zub
Josh Manson
Dylan Demelo
Adam Larsson
Damon Severson

Options Jonas kind of gave a “meh” to, whether because of acquisition cost or them being added depth rather than improvements:

Mark Pysyk
Ben Chiarot
Colin Miller
Justin Braun
John Klingberg

Option that Jonas clearly isn’t a fan of:

Luke Schenn

Zub would be a very nice add but i don't think they're trading him.

Mayfield is a solid physical guy but he's never really faced top matchup usage...until this year with Pulock injured, and i'm not sure this year's Isles are something worth emulating. When the Isles were good the last couple years Mayfield was a strict #4 at best but not in top matchup duty like the Muzz-Holl pair get for us.

the rest....eh. Larsson continues to get praised even though Ceci has been an upgrade over him in edmonton this year. He's just not very good and signed for a longtime. Manson at least has plenty of tough usage experience and with retention as a UFA he could be a fit.

bothers me to no end that people think bottom pair guys on bad defenses like Demelo would be good targets though.

If this is what’s out there, literally none of them are worth getting.

With the lack of options on D I worry that you're not gonna get good value there. Feels like there's a better crop of dudes available up front. Could result in some cheaper than usual deals with a higher supply. No need to be too picky about D vs forward unless you're specifically targeting a Chychrun. I mean, if fucking Chiarot is gonna land the Habs a 1st just get a forward.

Exactly. Seems like there are lots of available forwards and we need one or two to bolster the offense as backup for the big 4. I trust our current D and either way, if we lose let it be by unexpected bad D rather than the same pattern of anemic offense that plagues us every game 6 and 7.

I thought you meant this year.

No, Chiarot is the #1 on a turrible, turrible team. He was the Justin Holl on a mediocre one.

This bodes well for when we trade Justin Holl though I'm sure, right Canadian hockey media? If Chiarot is worth 1st ++, surely Justin Holl is worth the same?

I agree.

I don't think this team has proven enough in the playoffs to pay out on another Foligno UFA deal. The vet to put them over the top thing clearly hasn't worked.

has to be a guy under contract if we're spending those kind of assets.
