Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

still looks like 26 tries to lean into the av (aka interfere with him) - puck nowhere close

so i get why the ref "let it go" BUT it was also a high stick

The initial 50/50 contact was fine (defender was standing his ground), but the Av defender finishing the hit without even a cursory attempt to find or play the puck wasn't. Once the defender lost body position on the puck and they continue initiating contact, it becomes obstruction.

And yeah, I don't get the Mackinnon decision at all. If the expectation is that a player is to be in control of their stick at all time, abuse of the official should be taken into account under that umbrella. This wasn't Mackinnon making a "hockey play" and hitting an official. This was Mackinnon attempting to commit a penalty with his stick and while his stick was out of control during an attempted infraction, striking a ref.

Look at that slo-motion - is there even a hint of contact? Strange camera angle makes it a mess.
Yeah from what I saw he didn't really come close to hitting the linesman. Do we have any priors in suspending people for "almost" hitting someone with a stick?

I'd agree with this take on it, I think.

abuse of official minor penalty - sure
suspension - nah

the analysis should be less results driven and more process driven though. otherwise no one is going to get an actual suspension worth losing sleep over until someone loses an eye. a long-standing problem with NHL discipline for millenia...

I guess but I've never seen a guy get suspended for "almost" doing something against the rulebook. There just aren't any priors and there isn't anything in the rulebook to suspend a guy for swinging his stick and missing everything in sight.

I mean I would be pretty okay with this analysis:

Q1: did you attempt to commit a stick infraction? YES.

(if yes, answer Q2)

Q2: did you do so in a reckless or deliberate way likely to cause injury? YES.

(if yes, supplemental discipline)

pretty sure the rulebook would tell you taking a decapitation swing with your stick is illegal whether you make contact or not. of course, most refs (and the league at large) ignore the rulebook so not sure how much help it is.

Does it state that though? And is that a suspension or a minor penalty?

And I'm opposed to it too. I just don't see how they can suddenly start suspending people for stuff like that without a rule change or a verbal promise to enforce stuff like that through supplemental discipline. At the end of the day he just slashed the ice. Call a 2 minute minor for almost slashing a player if you must but I think a suspension would have been aggressive.

we all complain about inconsistency - this seems consistent

trying to find previous suspensions

found this

YES

Rule Book see p.103/226

Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not. Non-aggressive stick contact to the pant or front of the shin pads, should not be penalized as slashing. Any forceful or powerful chop with the stick on an opponent’s body, the opponent’s stick, or on or near the opponent’s hands that, in the judgment of the Referee, is not an attempt to play the puck, shall be penalized as slashing.

YES

Rule Book see p.103/226
So it should have been a 2 minute minor. Lots of things get missed tho. If that's a suspension then think of all the slashes that actually connect. There wouldn't be more than 5 teams in the league that could fill their roster after the suspensions that are handed out.

(not saying that this is how it SHOULD be.. but this IS how it is; the only confusion is that people think he slashed the linesman which is just not the case)
