Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Kings finally falling apart down the stretch.

Looks like the Knights will back into a playoffs spot after all.

no and no

(p.s. i am not arguing he should not receive a suspension)
So... if you were to be in charge of the disciplinary process and could throw out all precedents and start from scratch... what would you set the baseline for an intentional crosscheck to the face that causes injury at?

it is very hard to say, they have been too lenient in certain cases. It could be argued that the Matthews cross-check was worse than this one, more extension and speed and to the throat. Certainly not that much different, and people here argued in that case that Matthews should receive a hand job and a handwritten apology from Rasmus Dahlin as punishment. If this is 8-10, what is that one, 10-12?

We don't know what was said or the actions that lead up to this incident either, which are factors as is being a repeat offender. I say 4 games.

Auston is a Leaf, so of course he couldn't possibly do anything wrong. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize unreservedly to Auston and the entire Matthews family.

That's a lovely strawman you're building sir, does it do tricks?

The general sentiment at the time was that 1) What Auston did should be a suspension ...but...2) There was an assload (11 incidents, if memory serves) of precedent between the last cross check suspension and Auston's that were worse than Auston's, that came away with fines or no supplementary discipline.

So it's not that we didn't feel Auston's was worthy of a suspension in a vacuum (in fact, we generally argue that DoPS is far, far too light in their reactions and don't protect players...other than from Toronto Maple Leafs...they're well protected from us), it's that if recent precedent held, there shouldn't be a suspension. I still hold that opinion.

This was worse than AM's imo. This was 100% intentional. At least Matthews could argue that he was intending to hit the shoulder. I'd give Malkin 8 and AM 5 if I was doling it out.

I'm not sure it matters what was said. Unless you're arguing that Borowieki requested a cross check to the face.

Please stay safe untangling yourself from this pretzel logic. People do get suspended for crosschecking, I posted several examples.

No one is saying the NHL is perfect, but you don't need a vacuum to assess that Auston's crosscheck was worthy of a suspension. Just not 10+% of the season and well over a million dollars, because that's a ridiculous over-punishment. In my opinion. Same thing applies for Malkin.

Folks. The NHL is perfect and should never be criticized for anything ever.

League discipline has been a clown show for decades. Remember that Shanahan was the first person who brought relative consistency and severity to infractions (He starts DoPS as an office, and instituted the video explanations for better transparency) and he was widely, widely fucking hated for it and the GM's brought the knives out for him behind closed doors.

At the time, there were a number of similar incidents that occured between the last suspension before Auston's and Auston's. No contortion is ever necessary to point out hilarious levels of inconsistency from DoPS.

That's what we were upset about. Not that Auston got suspended for an illegal play, but the at minimum seemingly random if not flat out biased nature of who gets suspended for similar incidents.

Spare me the weasel word bullshit. They're deeply, heavily, systematically flawed and have been for decades. Miss me with your bullshit.

This is from 2011...

The NHL's supplemental discipline system is an inconsistent, hypocritical mess; marred by politics and accusations of bias, while failing to deter subsequent acts of violence by players or teams after their punishments are doled out. But other than that, it's quite effective.

Nothing has changed, and they went after the only guy who actually tried to change it.

your hockey trolling is weak...stick to health and finance
The big issue was that it was half assed. I like axl too much to go too hard. Plus contrarians are welcome on a forum where everyone always agrees with eachother!

I already said some slightly antivax shit and barely survived the barrage. That's enough contrarian for me.
