Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

i know people are going to say "its not just pervasive through hockey its society in general" and that's probably true to some extent... but think there is an expectation of behaviour when it comes to women that gets confused with strength and masculinity. it not only affects attitudes towards women but also makes it a community where sex abuse of players by coaches gets covered up because of the extreme amount of shame associated with it.

i've been pretty open about this but my father really struggled with various hockey-culture related expectations playing ohl hockey in the 70s.

That's my issue with "hockey culture". It's been constructed from the beginning as an insular kingdom that was designed on purpose to hide physical, mental, and by extension sexual, abuse. Worse still, it holds a fuckton of abusive practices as norms that speaking out against makes you the bad guy for doing. When I talk about burning it down and starting over, I'm not being edgy, I'm being honest. You can't reform the normalization of abuse. You have to cut the head(s) off and start from the ground up with an entirely new set of sub societal expectations, new leadership, etc.

Even if I wasn't a Leaf fan, I would want to see the new Leafs model succeed. It's largely based on actual inclusion over institutional sexism/racism, data over tropes, etc. We kind of need the on ice product to stop being a fucking playoff meme.
