Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

It amazes me that there are people who still think he's some sort of statistics driven hockey executive. The spreadsheet didn't tell him to trade for Karlsson and trade Guentzel away.

At the same time, Dubas’s fetishization of cardio merchant depth players is very much an analytics-driven tendency, no?

Seems like all of the biggest nerd stats guys on Twitter adore Engvall/Jarnkrok-esque players that are soft as melted butter and skate around a lot but make absolutely nothing happen in either direction of play when they’re out on the ice.

That’s not to say that Dubas didn’t deviate from a stats-driven approach with his pivot to toughness and leaderbeans acquired with excessive draft capital. It’s almost like he cooked the worst aspects of an analytics-driven approach and the old-school hockey approach into a thin, rancid stew of perpetual failure.

They, and everyone else Dubas added, were all good at limiting xGA. Acciari, Amadio, Kerfoot, Engvall, Rodrigues are all positive (negative) rel xGA/60 over the last 3 years. And Kampf used to be one of the best at that. ZAR was one of the best for years.Krok was good to before the got him.

I don't think those were eye test guys. Its too big of a coincidence that all of their forward additions were good at the same stat.

But using stats doesn't mean you aren't stupid, or know how to build a hockey team.

Regular season really only important in division, given that there are usually a couple divisions with absolute tanked teams that skew the point totals in the league standings.
