Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy after awhile. When Labatt's took over sponsorship from Molson 20 odd years ago, all of a sudden you stopped seeing Habs games in English on Saturday night because they played at the then Molson Centre. When you're a kid and the only team you can watch without a Centre Ice package is the Leafs, you probably grow up to be a Leafs fan. Not because the Leafs are good or fun to watch, but merely because it's all you get to watch. One of my nephews in Toronto grew up then and became a Leafs fan mostly because of the fact that he never saw any other team. (Well, that, and the fact that my brother failed to provide a home free of any Leafs influences when the kid was in his formative years) Now the kid is 25 or 26 and he went from rabid Leafs fan to barely watching hockey anymore because, even at his relatively young age, he's already fed up with the Leafs and their constant failure. He told me he's simply "tired of seeing them lose every year".

When I was a kid growing up, I could avoid the Leafs on most Saturday nights because the CBC affiliate in Peterborough had the Habs game most of the time and the NBC affiliate in Buffalo always had Sabres games. Today, a kid in Fort Erie who can see the Sabres arena from across the river won't ever see a Sabres game unless it's one versus the Leafs. The Sabres used to have fans in the Niagara Peninsula. But not anymore since none of their games can be seen there.

So of course your team will always have the most fans if the networks and sponsors conspire to disappear all the other teams from everyone's televisions.
