Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

I would hope so....doesn't every team listen to some extent? The other night I head some Sportsnet muppet (Greg Millen? Galley?) rattle a bunch of advanced stats during the game. They've gone mainstream and then some...

I do know Ducharme takes analytics seriously

Excel spreadsheets don’t win hockey games

Looking at the last ten years of cup winners... I disagree with this immensely. Excel spreadsheets are an incredible tool. The most important to building a hockey team, free of bias.

They are a great tool if your team is complete and has talent to compete

I don’t need Microsoft to assist that Tampa , Kings or Hawks had good stats when winning a cup

Edmunson has nice stats but a 5th D isn’t helping me much when most of my top 6 can barely score 10 goals

no...but someone who knows how to read a spreadsheet gives themselves a pretty nice edge

What edge ?

Typically really good teams have nice stats

Take Buffalo’s 12 best players , I bet all look like shit compared to other teams

There's no such thing as a good player on a bad team then? I don't get what you're saying here.

My point is this obsession with analytics has to be taken with a grain of salt

A shit team like Buffalo will have poor team and many individual stats

Put Dahlin in Toronto , TBay or other really good teams his numbers look better

Too many moving parts from game to game and shift to shift to simply suggest analytics rule

That's why modern analytics are so superior than the traditional ones - the hugely larger number of data points let's us separate individual performance from team effects in a significant way.

This is how you pull a Petry out of Edmonton or a Toffoli from LA - by being able to adjust for team effects and seeing that these are underrated players.

Nah. This is dumb. If you're simply using the eye test, most players on a shit team are going to look bad. More data provides the context needed.

No idea how they were going to make an entire team that just had COVID play 19 games in 30 days. Mind you, pro athletes do a lot of things that amaze me. It takes a lot out of you though.

The only names we've heard rumoured that I'd pay a first round pick for are Rakell and Ekholm. maybe Kuemper if he'd stayed healthy.
