Thing is, they should be willing to retain salary on a short deal like Hoffman's. The improved asset package you would get for the retention would actually make the deal worth it. Might be able to strangle a 2nd and a decent prospect out of someone for 2 x 2.25. The problem at the moment is that there's not a whole lot of market for a 4.5 million dollar middle 6 winger if the receiving team has to have cap space.
There are about a dozen clubs with the full cap space currently, but most of those have RFA's they've set the money aside for or are mid tank. Only teams I see with the space and the maybe desire to add Hoffman would be Nashville, Detroit, Winnipeg, Calgary. Don't see a lot of openings for LW's there, other than Calgary when they trade Tkachuk.
In years that you're not trying to be competitive, the Habs should be all over retaining salary to get value for players the organization doesn't need anymore. I get not wanting to retain on Gallagher or Anderson but on Hoffman, even Armia? Fucking retain. Get as much future value as possible.
