I honestly thought every team did a salute to the fans in their last home game every season. I never thought to mock it.

I didn't and am not mocking it, didn't bother me a bit and in fact I didn't even see it.

I am mocking those who are perturbed by those who are mocking it though.

Because the criteria for the Leafs is different. The Habs don't have a Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Tavares core. Nothing is expected so any small advancement, like qualifying for the playoffs, is a thing.

If the Leafs had to wait until Game 82 to clinch a playoff spot you'd be pissed off, and rightly so. And for you, anything short of a Cup is going to be just another failure, your 59th in a row. The Habs can win or lose and it doesn't matter because they aren't even supposed to be there. But things are expected of your team, and deep down you know they aren't going to reach them because they never have and they never will until the core is busted up.

so the habs have lower expectations because they don't have a fundamentally flawed core that will never succeed.

this is why I come here, for well thought out reasoned debates like this one.
