it's probably more because they don't have any 1sts to trade, for starters. what's dumb is having spent them already on players who didn't even address an actual need. the Leafs don't even appear to understand what's wrong with their team let alone how to fix it.

I'm sure tax considerations are the first thing on this pro athlete's mind when considering a trade! and the fact that they are the two-time defending champs prolly matters very little

You think someone who signs a longterm deal in Florida (at a discounted rate to account for tax) would be just as likely to agree to waive to go to a team without this advantage?

Ignore the organization's, success, etc. All else equal. Is he as likely to waive? I'm not sure why this is so difficult.
