Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

unfortunately Naz has become pretty well liked in calgary, and they're well under the cap. Naz' contract isn't a huge anchor on them. They might even see him as a valuable vet anchor for a rebuild.

Then again, they have Backlund as the vet leader center presence for the rebuild, and have at least Frost that they want to be growing into a C, so maybe moving Kadri at age 34 is still something they want to do.

tough to know what calgary is trying to do at the moment. They were a bubble team last year.
they also fucking loathe Tre, which may be the biggest barrier...

I'd aim higher than Naz honestly. Try to get a F/D in their mid 20s, that can be part of the core for a long time.

Sounds pricey though. I agree in general, but thats harder and more expensive to find. We might have to settle with a short term old that maintains cap flexibility for us.

It is pricy. But thats fine. Go after a Reinhart/Hertl/Hanifin/Stone type player when they become available rather than blow the space just because we have it.

At the end of the day we have the cap space because we lost one of the best players in the game. We need to add an impact player. Ideally a D tbh.

I'd try to find another Maccelli type add. Take a chance on an undervalued young forward, and keep flexibility to use the big resources on a top pairing D for when that opportunity arises..

In terms of names that are out there: Ehlers, Robertson, Byram, Andersson.

McDavid obviously, Harley is an RFA next year, Lacombe, Mintunyuk and Zellweger are all RFAs next year, will the Ducks sign 3 LDs? Makar and Hughes are 2 years from UFA.

Is Connor resigning in Winnpeg? Can we get Auston to tamper Eichel?

Good players will move.

I dont think you can trade for any of those things.

any of those guys actually gonna be pushed out by a cap crunch tho?

names please

If we're looking for an established younger impact guy who might be available, and/or their team might be dumb

- Elias Pettersson
- Jordan Kyrou
- Alex Tuch
- Tage Thompson
- Troy Terry
- Jason Robertson

If we're looking for a really young guy who is RFAish and might price himself out of his team's plans or otherwise be moveable ("Find the next Bennett!)

- Neighbours
- Holloway
- Pinto
- McMichael
- Nemec
- Hayton
- Perfetti

I made a list of olds/bad-ish contracts yesterday.

I think Naz is good enough to be in the Leafs top 6, can be affordable in a deal for a team with next to no assets and you can probably get Calgary to take Krok or Kampf in the deal too.

He makes alot of sense so does Zibenejad

I dont think they have the stuff for Rust or Rakell and especially not Robertson

For most of these guys you're gonna be looking at a "hockey trade." Because the leafs have no futures and because a rising cap (at least for now) means almost every team is looking to be good now. Only real solid trade chip they have no is Carlo but I'd trade him now while he still has the bruins reputation. A season on the leafs and he'll be considered shit by most.

He seems to be aware that there is likely to be better value on the trade market as teams look to unencumber themselves from some contracts that aren't working out, or that a previous administration signed, rather than firing money at a weak UFA class.

Better to wait a few months into the season when some supposedly good teams get off to horrible starts and start selling pieces

I suspect that’s what Hughes is doing in MTL

The original plan was trade Carlo and replace him with Ekblad. But honestly the better move is trade him and replace him with Burns on a one year deal. See if Ehlers doesn’t find his term deal and overpay him on a one year deal. Ehlers, Burns, and whatever Carlo gets you is a pretty big upgrade. And leaves the expiring money for a McDavid pitch next year.

Yeah, I have zero qualms with being patient and giving Machiavelli and Robbie legit opportunities to provide a bunch of the offence we're missing with the exit of the Bitch.

Then wait until the deadline when a "Hanifin" type trade is out there for a player we want who will extend with us.

Robertson-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Tavares-Nylander
Maccaroni-Roy-McMann
Lorrentz-Laughton-Whoever

Insert Cowan into that wherever if he looks ready in training camp and let's go.

I agree but the concern I have is that it's so rare for a team like the leafs to go into the season with this much cap space. I just hope he doesn't force a deal and grab some mediocre talent with term that kills the final competitive advantage they have (cap space) thanks to Marner's departure.

So far his patience and restraint has impressed me. But this could easily go horribly wrong. He has fully acknowledged that he will be replacing Marner and will probably do it this summer. That move is gonna make or break a lot for me.

What do you trade for that Hanifin type? We have no picks and need to keep Cowan.

All 32 teams are currently in make the playoffs mode

By Christmas, some teams will transition to tank for McKenna mode.

That’s when some deals will happen

Biggest influence on how we're going to be this year isn't who we replace Mitch with, it's which version of Auston Matthews arrives. If he's the 40 goal half busted version we got last year, it seriously lowers our ceiling. Him being a top ~5 centre in the league even when busted raises our floor, but the return of Hart Matthews would more or less completely replace the loss of Mitch in the regular season on his own.
