Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

Nobody with a brain turns town Tavares at $4M or so.

He's not the DNA you want to change. Whether he produces in those games or not (and none of them have), he's still a model for professionalism and busting your ass every shift on the ice. You still also have to make the playoffs, and having a 2C with 35+ goal power is a key to that. There is literally nobody on the market who will bring what he brings as a UFA, and if they did, they'd charge double.
I have no problem with JT as a 2LW at $4m. but I'd like us to upgrade on him as 2LC. he gets caved every playoffs.

I think years of Toronto and media bullying him ( in his bitch mind) probably makes him more open to a lesser market. I also suspect, end of the day he's simply a greedy bitch who only cares about the money and quality of life. Anaheim, LA fit him so much IMO

I see Marner in any of the following

Chicago- Desperation + Money
LAK- Desperation + Money + Sun+
Anaheim- Less fancy LAK
San Jose- LAK minus desperation
Carolina- Hilarious
Vegas- Attaches Kalrsson to Hague in a trade and fits Marner in somehow ( Nevada Tax)
I actually think Pittsburgh makes the most sense if he's leaving. He's for sure buds with Dubie, and Dubie's best chance of making the playoffs and injecting some life into that decrepit roster is to add a prime Marner. He has Crosby, Malkin, and Letang over there who can "lead" and play big in the big games. Marner would be a great add for absolutely nothing.

nah he's got a complex from the toronto media. he needs the validation. I don't think he wants to just cash cheques in the sun somewhere. guess we'll see soon enough.

Federer was losing it pretty bad but found the right doc within the last year or two and now looks like a kid again.

Some of the work they do is amazing.

This post brought to you by Jack Burton.

Oh, that's always the right way. I'm just saying that if you're choosing between the Jeff Van Gundy or the Michael Jordan, be like Mike.

seems reasonable and logical to me

Pittsburgh adds Marner and goes from bottom 3-5 in NHL to bottom 10.

They could do it, but it would be dumb on both sides.

I've been anti-Domi from day one. I appreciate that he does bring something in the playoffs, but not as a C. He needs to stay on the wing if he sticks around. Tavares is still a great C. Get Bennett and you're finally legit strong down the middle, in a way that we weren't other than with ROR briefly and before that the season that Tavares and Kadri were both on the team.

we agree Domi is not the answer as 2lc. I don't think there is anything available as an FA that solves it (unless we get Bennett, which I am resigned to). dunno who we could pluck in a trade though.

Unlike Tre, Dubie is pretty creative and likes to trade. If he could get Marner for free, he can find a few guys to dump on other teams for picks, that freed up money into the UFA market and land a fish or two. Say somehow he pulls off Bennett and Ekblad. If he can land Marner, he can make things interesting over there. Unlikely to win a cup interesting, but interesting.

I'm usually the cheerleader for Toronto boys coming home, but I'm less confident about that when they're leaving a perfect fit on an awesome team. I'm sort of expecting them to announce his extension at any minute, or within a day or two after the finals. If he's there on July 1, then yeah, I'd say we're the favorites.

And maybe Tre's position on this whole thing is to wait and see if the Panthers can retain their guys before doing anything with Marner.

It's a money thing for Florida though. They're at about 77 million next season on 10F, 5D, 1G. Ekblad is probably their first priority and he's going to push them up to 85-86 million. 10 million to fill in the rest of the roster isn't a lot. This is where smart Florida goes looking for their next Bennett on the cheap most likely.

Our getting Bennett doesn't do us much good if we lose Tavares. Losing both Marner and Tavares would be impossible to overcome imo.

Having both Tavares and Bennett is kinda the only way forward where we can actually be better (while adding another guy too with the remaining Marner money), other than whatever hidden opportunities there are in the trade market. But Tre is not a trader unless compelled, so I think it's UFAs or nothing.

I hope it works out that way.

And smart as they want to be, I don't think they just trip over another Bennett replacement for cheap. They'll be worse next year, especially if Marchand, who's been amazing for them in the playoffs, leaves.

Surprised we haven't seen pitt mentioned with regard to marner.

$24.5MM in cap space with virtually nobody of consequence to sign. Couple years with Crosby and company and then he takes over as the guy.

Super player friendly market, out of division but close to home.

Chicago, Pitt, LA, San Jose etc all seem like terrible opportunities for him.

Why would he go to a shit team to become a saviour?

Carolina or Vegas make sense.
