The NHL is just different. In no other league would the biggest media markets in the league struggle with some players because they don't like the attention of being a professional athlete.
The NHL is also different in that in only a few cities are you an actual celebrity. The NHL is just different. In no other league would the biggest media markets in the league struggle with some players because they don't like the attention of being a professional athlete.
Pretty sure there's an unofficial statute of limitations on being a 1OA.JT was a #1 overall
Tanev went undrafted
Prestige matters!!!
Also, Florida has proven themselves to be one of the best run franchises on the ice in recent years, with excellent drafting/trades.
Can the Leafs even call themselves average?
Winning in Toronto or Montreal may indeed be "more special" but it isn't more special than all those other things you mentioned, and when combined with winning it in a no tax jurisdiction? Yeah, I think pretty much all of them will "settle" for winning a Cup in a slightly "less special" place. There seems to be this myth that winning a cup in Toronto or Montreal is more special than winning one anywhere else.
The majority of athletes are cool, winning, waking up in a nice city ( ideally with sunshine), working out, and being left the fuck alone by the general public.
Expensive housing, shit traffic, being hounded by the horde at a restaurant and critiqued for anything you do and do not do in a game by every muppet analyst and slack jawed fan is not fucking appealing.
Hockey players are mostly international hosers who run away from cameras
Earning USD in Canada is a pretty big advantage, too.
Because in no other league are the biggest (or at least, the most important) markets, and the ones with the highest level of fan engagement located in Canada. In other sports, the richest teams are also the ones in the media hubs: NYC, LA, Boston, Chicago. In the NHL, Winnipeg is a "bigger" hockey market than LA.The NHL is just different. Which is why I am forever baffled by the Marner ball-lickers when they say that without Marner's regular season production the Leafs might miss the playoffs, as if they had no other good players.I mean, this is kind of silly. If we're looking at results on the ice the Leafs have been the 3rd best regular season team in the NHL over the last 5 years. There aren't too many organizations who start the year knowing that they're in the playoffs short of a plane crash or some shit.
Same in Montreal. An anglo Montrealer like Matheson, who is bilingual to boot, has no issues but francophone star players would rather have root canals done on every tooth in their heads than sign with the Habs. Only when they're basically washed up and just looking for a retirement contract do they suddenly express an interest in fulfilling their childhood dream of wearing the bleu, blanc, et rouge. The Euros don't seem to mind at all when they're here. Shit, even Auston seems to embrace it. It's the Canadian kids who seem to dislike it the most.

Marchand we can agree loves to be on camera. Even awkward Mitch made a ton. And he can barely make any sense when he speaks.Toronto's financial advantages only exist if you want to be in front of cameras on your days off.
There's nothing lazy at all about pointing this out, you just continue to be wrong on this while insisting that you're not.

he'd make more here than anywhere else. don't think that is really up for debateMarchand appears to be able to get commercials and ad work wherever though. He's one of the few guys in the league that doesn't really need Toronto for that.
He appears to have had a lot of deals in Boston, but the overall $ doesn't seem too high.Marchand appears to be able to get commercials and ad work wherever though. He's one of the few guys in the league that doesn't really need Toronto for that.
Careful what you wish forWhich is why I am forever baffled by the Marner ball-lickers when they say that without Marner's regular season production the Leafs might miss the playoffs, as if they had no other good players.
The fact is that the Leafs, with or without Marner, can make the postseason just by falling out of bed. They don't need Marner for that. And what they do need him for is what he does not deliver. Ergo, he is useless, other than as a trade chip. But management fucked that up too.
