Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

I would love to have Marchand. He is a great fit as he plays all the same roles marner does (5v5 difficult minutes, PP, PK) and for all the money wasted on "intangibles" over the years, his personality and work ethic is exactly what this team needs.

But I won't be upset if we don't end up signing him to a worse contract than Marleau.

pickings are slim in UFA without the Florida guys though.

Friedman is making it sound like Florida will do everything they can to keep Bennett, Ekblad and Marchand and none have much interest in leaving.

Said the Leafs and Utah will be the two with the biggest pitch to Marchand however Florida will have to give him a reason to leave

It comes down to money. They have 19 million to fill 7 roster spots. Even all 3 being willing to take less or way less to stay (6 for Bennett, 7 for ekblad, 5 for Marchand) doesn't leave them enough to fill out their roster.

If marner signs in the eastern conference I fully except the leafiest of leafy things to happen.. for instance.. marner having a 5 goal/12 point series performance against us to knock us out of the playoffs . Absolutely zero percent chance that wont happen.

No one wanted to play in Florida when they had tax discounts and nice weather when the team was shit. This is all about how good they are.
They went 26 years without winning a playoff round. The 2023 Boston series was their first win since beating the Pens to go to the 96' finals.
Bingo , they created a winning culture and great place for players and families to live. The tax savings helps but an excuse as the main reason players go or stay there

I think he ends up out west, in Vegas, probably.

If the Leafs can't muster up enough physicality to give Marner his annual playoff yips, there are much larger problems here.

He has "Intangibles" but can put the puck in the net. They keep getting guys that can't score. It's laughable.

Also, re Aaron Ekblad.

He reeks of a guy who takes "someone's money" that normally doesn't get taken.

I can see any of Carolina, Detroit, Buffalo, or Columbus with a fairly big overpay here

If I'm Zito, I'd prioritize Ekblad over Marchand...despite all the narratives out there and Marchand's status as HOF rat, I think his 37 year old self is easier to replace.
Yep, some team will make it rain for Marchand and he will immediately start playing like a washed-up 37 year old.

I'm hoping that Marner's camp comes to the leafs with a deal with Vegas so that he can get the 8th year 13/13.5 x 8 but then we take Pietrangelo off their hands and keep him on LTIR for the WHHHOLLLE year and then you spend the whole year recovering and bring him back for round one.
You see if that is even possible by the trade deadline and if he's ready to go, then you trade Reilly away at the deadline for picks and an impact forward.

I also offer 9.5 to Bennet and tell JT to hit the road.
