Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

(most teams get to play weak opposition in the playoffs some of the time, some teams even most of the time!)

“Weak opposition” is underselling it.

Most teams don’t get to face even one playoff opponent that finished outside of the top-16 in the standings. Let alone two teams that finished out of the top-16!

But hey, if you want to join the rest of the hockey world in jerking Mitch off for torching two non-playoff teams, have at it buddy!

The amount of defenders in the history of the NHL who should have been taken #1 overall at the time they were drafted can almost fit on one hand. They're just harder prospects to project. A truly elite #1 overall pick defender usually needs to be elite at both ends of the ice to justify it over the best forward of most drafts and very few elite defenders are actually that guy at both ends. Nearly every time a defence prospect has been in the conversation for #1 overall, they've turned out to not be BPA out of the top 3-4 picks in the end. Phillips, J-Bo, Johnson, Larsson, Murray, Ekblad, Power, Nemec. Dahlin and maybe Shaefer the only exceptions over the last ~25 years.

Lane Hutson should have went #1.
Check his net rating.

A pick like that, you have to look around your own room of scouts and be like, if you missed him that late, what the fuck am I even paying you for?

A lot of other "clutch playoffs" players have goosed their stats against shit teams!

nobody missed him, nobody believed his size wouldn't handicap him
That's missing him. To not be able to tell that he could be a viable NHL player, when he basically just stepped onto the NHL roster and was an impact player almost immediately means you're a know-nothing and worth-nothing scout.

and you're trolling more.

Scouts don't make the picks

I'm sure scouts all over the league were banging the tables for him. I'm sure the Habs scout wanted him picked late in the first round. I remember a bunch of Habs posters like me, worm and others, were disappointed he wasn't drafted early in the the 2nd...it becomes a tactical game of "we want him but no sense picking him way ahead of the competition"

Kent Hughes is the first to admit that while he thought Lane would be good, he didn't think he'd be this good, this quickly.
