I mean NMC are part of the problem, but really all any player has to do is announce that they do not intend to sign another contract and management has to start considering whether to move them or not.
My first instinct was to say that if any player with a NMC demands a trade, that their trade protection is immediately voided. But again, a player just has to threaten not to sign an extension, and you have the same scenario.

The issue isn’t the NMC, the issue is that the player is limiting the team’s options in making a trade for value.
Of course, none of us will complain when McJesus demands a trade to the Leafs.
