Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Mantha is kinda JVR redux. Everyone knows he's skilled and productive but he's just never loved or even liked much by any coach or org.

It's kind of a weird move by sunny tbh - he had a good chunk of capspace - near $9m, to spend on a true impact forward, and now added a just ok guy like Mantha for half of that and has about the same left to spend on another forward.

i was expecting him to really weaponize that ~$9m but this isn't that i don't think.
Or... He's smarter than you.

Mantha looks like another reclamation swing by Mehta. He was successful at it in Florida and this mirrors some of those acquisitions.

I mean Mantha has always been productive when he's on the ice, you just could never rely on him to do it for more than 50-60 games. Maybe they've finally replaced all of the weak tendons in his shoulders and knees and he'll be good into his mid 30s.

If he isn’t playing with the other Mr. Glass (Jack Hughes) he won’t be putting up 30. Might not even get 20.

Eh, it's not about smarter. GM's are under time pressure to put a roster on the ice that they expect to be competitive enough to meet upper management expectations and aren't as focused on min/maxxing every move they make.

Sunny saw an empty spot in his lineup, looked at his available options and made a measured bet on Mantha. I bet some of the GM's who bet on JVR don't regret the bet they made even if they didn't choose to invest in him long term.

Yeah not everything a gm does is master 5d chess. Sometimes (I.e. most of the time) plans A, B, C and D don't materialize and you end up needing to place a small low risk bet to fill the lineup on a good offensive player. Doesn't make it a bad bet or a bad signing, but it's probably not what he would have preferred in a perfect world.

Like the Leafs with Roslovic, I've got no issues with that signing other than him seemingly rushing into it and everything else he did that day.

Yeah, had we ended up with these guys because we were patient and they came cheap I'd be better with it all than our bottom 6 being the product of us rushing to market with a fist full of cash and getting this.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, and the one thing Tredonkey did right was wait out UFA day and get some of the bigger names on short 1 year deals to tide them over till the next year.

But then of course the donkey element kicks in and out of all of them, he extends Domi for a thousand years.

By the sounds of things we've learned since, I don't think he was waiting things out. He was actively pursuing a bunch of players that he just didn't get.

Who did he try to get? I’m guessing whoever he missed on, it was because he wasn’t willing to be the top bidder, which is sort of a form of waiting things out.

I know that other rumour is probably bullshit, but I wonder if there is a player waiting for the leafs to open up cap space....I wonder about Bunting or Tolvinen E.T is a pretty aggressive player. I kinda would like to see Bunting added as the other possibility.

I can have my signed Bunting jersey in my office have some value again
