Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

Minnesota doesn’t attract high end talent. Letting him walk wasn’t really an option for a team that has to start winning in the playoffs.
Minny is winning nothing

Take that 17 mil plus the cap increase and fix up multiple areas

He has accomplished squat other than winning a calder as an older player

No team or playoff success , no all NHL teams , hardware etc...

Leon (14 mil ) has done it all but a cup, Rantanan is a playoff performer with a cup and making 5 mil less

Minny overpaid for a player that doesnt move a franchise

With 17 million they are still in better shape than they've been. I think if anything they've overachieved with that roster with the buyouts they've had on their cap.
They need a star. They can't lose 1 for 'Depth"

They would have approx 30-40 mil to go shopping

No issue with keeping a star but this isnt the needle moving stud like 97 , Leon , Makar , etc...

5 mil more than Rants or 3 more than Leon , this is Dubas 2.0

Some silly arguments being made in here. Yeah it's a bit of an overpay, but the cap just went up a lot, and it will probably happen again in a couple of years. Meanwhile, NHL salaries have been artificially limited for years, due to less overall revenue, exacerbated by covid, etc.

Contracts are going to go up over the next 5-10 years, by a lot. Get used to it.

As for Kaprizov specifically, he's a star, and stars get paid. There is a massive amount of support for hockey in the state of Minnesota, it's dumb to say it's a bad market. And they have a good team with some great assets like Boldy, Ek, Rossi, Faber. Spurgeon's $7.575m and Hartman's $4m come off the books after next season. Tarasenko (4.75) and Zuccarello (4.125) after this season. They are going to be just fine.

Nobody wants to play in Minnesota.

I don’t go for quantity over quality.

If your not winning , you build a deeper roster without him and tighter defence

If your competing for titles its one thing , and when everyone has money to burn soon Minny will get players

700 players cant play for a few select teams or no state tax

You ring the same bell every time.

They need to make the playoffs and have the cap space. He’s their star. They weren’t getting anyone with his talent in the open market because they don’t hit the market often.

What? You think they should have saved the money for McDavid?

It’s an overpayment, some markets have to do so.

but they are winning.

they were 25-13-3 with him in the lineup last year. a 106pt pace.

they lost to a very good Knights team in the playoffs, in a crazy tight series where they outscored the Knights, losing the last 3gms by one goal, including 2 in OT.

Kaprizov is a top-5 player in the league, and would have been right near the top of the Hart voting if he hadn't been injured.

The entirety of his $8m raise next year is paid for with the current $5+ mil in capsapce they have and the $4+ currently paid to 38yr old Zuccarello.

And then they still have the entire $8.5m in cap increase next year to spend,

All iffs and buts ....team has done fuck all in his tenure

Star player but Guerin took it up the ass with a large kolbassa

and even if they weren't winning, there is no world where losing Kaprizov makes them better, short term or long term.
