Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

I don't have any interest in a homer Habs broadcast. I assume RDS does that, but there's no English homers Habs feed. We get Hab haters like Gary Galley and other former Bruins or Leafs. It doesn't bother me at all... better than those American local broadcasts where they are ridiculously biased.

I honestly don't see the Leafs being shit on in any broadcasts... definitely not vs the Habs anyway.

Eh, I kind of do to a point. There is no one as fun to listen to as Joe Bowen if you're a Leaf fan. It's not that I want someone bitching and moaning about every penalty call like the Buffalo and Boston guys traditionally do, but I want someone who is legitimately excited when the Leafs score a goal and a bit deflated when scored against. I watch Matt and Jack do Raptors games, as well as Buck & Dan for Jays games and it's just a completely different experience than anything I've ever had as a Leaf fan.

For truly national games I get it to a degree, but yeah I had a decade of hearing Hughson nut every time the Canucks scored a goal while on the other hand getting "HEEEERE COMES".....insert team getting dummied by the Leafs because they scored in the mid 3rd to make it 5-2, or sound like a loved one just died if the Leafs score to put a game away. If I can't have Cole and Neale who make everything sound equally awesome, I definitely don't want a fan of another Canadian team calling our games and actively trying to give me anxiety or underplay/deliver on our best moments.

its a shame he was relegated to radio because of non-Leafs fans being butthurt.

This is maybe the best example of the implicit bias that we're talking about. No other organization gets an announcer banished from their regional broadcasts because other fanbases don't like him.

Regional broadcasters likely have relationships with the players, and that comes out in the broadcast. Bowen will talk about recent stories with players, and actively cheers for the bottom six guys to score. He's genuinely having a good time in the booth if the team is playing well.

Gord Miller on the other hand, is more pessimistic or intentionally trying to remain neutral during the broadcast - to the point that Mike Johnson has to pipe in repeatedly to remind him of actual facts regarding the team. Gord Miller would rather talk about goal droughts, team records when trailing after a period, or salary-cap woes than actually try and emote.

That isn't why any announcer gets canned. The only reason anything happens is because money. If corporate determines that the play by play guy is making more money than they want to pay, or of they think they have someone "good enough" who's willing to work cheap, that's who gets the job.

TSN didn't give those Sens game to a female announcer because she was the best available, she got the job because she's willing to work for peanuts. Corporations dont see their on air talent as assets; they are merely a cost. And like any other cost, a corporation will always seek ways to minimize costs. They dont give a shit about quality because people will watch regardless.

Regional broadcast play by play guys are usually paid employees of the team, not the TV or radio station that carries the games. And even when they're not paid directly by the team, the team does usually have the right to hire and fire them.

Dave Hodge, who for a time in the 70's did play by play for the Argos on CFRB, got fired by the team for "not being positive enough". This, after a season in which the Argos won precisely 2 games out of 16.

This is how you end up with shameless lickspittles like Fergie Olver or Jim Ralph on your broadcasts.

Chevy might actually get fired in Winnipeg., His offseason was a disaster. He actually did a Treliving with the intangibles, leadership stuff.

If Chevy is fired.

You can Brad and hand him the keys.

He's done a very good job keeping the worst market ( outside of Buffalo) competitive and his track record of drafting/team building goes well back to his days as an AGM under Bowman in Chicago, where time seems to indicate, he might have even had a bigger impact there.

I agree. He's gotten guys to sign there and most deals were very fair. But he's been there so long that a setback could be the end of him.

Some updates on that small Oly rink.
