I mean, he only moved to Canada to play in the OHL when he was 16, but sure. He ain't coming to Canada.

He wasn't a taxpayer making a 7 figure salary back then. Canada is a great place to live if you're not made of money and reliant on a social safety net. If you're a multi-millionaire and you want to keep a larger portion of what you earn in your pocket, you're better off in the US.

That's really of zero relevance to Landeskog's reality in 2021. He might agree to play for the Leafs - if they overpay - but it has nothing to do with having played in the OHL a lifetime ago so that he could be drafted into the NHL at a high spot.

Why would Leafs want another forward ?

Seriously, try to fit another #1 dmen under your cap, trade one of your forwards to make it happen.

Their window is closing pretty fast, as they made the mistake to sign Matthews to 5 years instead of 8 years......

The Matthews contract should of been 8 years

6% less than McJesus and team only bought 1 year of UFA

It all comes down to the JT contract .....not the player

One move created all the cap gymnastics moving forward for a team that never won a round in over a decade

You get JT when your ready to win not trying to assemble a roster after a gut job

The amount of assets they (Dubas and crew) have squandered to try and build a winning roster after killing their cap situation is mind boggling.

It all started with the Plekanec trade at the DL in 2018 and ends with a 1st for Foligno, losing Hyman to FA, and Kerfoot to ED.

When looking at that timeline, there are some doozies in there. Can't believe they squandered a perennial contender and created a windowless capped out team which will likely lose AM in 3 years.

The thing is they were capped out 3-4 years into a gut rebuild

The minor moves are not the cap problem

They paid JT before they took care of their 2 most important forwards of the last 20 years

On 20+ other teams that contract is a non issue as they are no comparables or a salary bar to worry about

The future cap consequences was going to bite them when the payroll pecking order was established

Unfortunately the Covid flat cap made it even worse , as most projected a 90 mil ceiling about now
