Around The League - 2025 Playoffs

The sentimental dipshits on Twitter saying "How could they do this to the greatest player in franchise history????", like this isn't pro sports and it isn't a results-oriented business.

Stamkos was probably asking for way too much, he's probably at the end (or outright past) his prime and they're replacing him with a player that's probably better than he is right now.

This is very, very smart GMing by Julien Brisebois.

Stamkos has missed 3GP total over last 3-full seasons - Guentzel is getting more & more injured every season over that same time period and he’s a much smaller frame

Tampa Bay can't give Guentzel 8 years. They can only give him 7.

If he wanted 8 years, they would have needed to do a sign & trade with Carolina.

(Semantics, I know.)

FWIW - Stamkos did meet in person w Molson & MB last time around, and apparently wants to stay on East Coast

They traded for his rights to be able to give him 8, if he hits UFA and signs it can only be 7. No?

I’m wrong take that back it’s only 7yrs max. Had to be on roster trade deadline

The deal Guentzel's about to get is the type of deal I hate. A long-term deal for a soon-to-be 30 year old forward that isn't headed to the HHOF.

That said, I don't think Tampa Bay cares much about what happens in year 4 to 7 of the contract. By then, Hedman, Kucherov, Point are all going to be on the downside of their careers and the rebuild's going to be starting.

Guentzel Vs Stamkos is a question of, who's going to be better for the next 3 years? I think the best bet would be Guentzel.

To my surprise, Kotkaniemi hasn't been placed on waivers for purpose of a buyout yet.

Carolina technically has one more year with him where they could buy him at 1/3 of the cost, if they so choose.
