Canes Name Bill Peters as New Head Coach

trying to listen to the presser, but my connection is not the best. However, what I am hearing, I like...He's saying all the right things and clearly did his homework on this team. Appears to have a good early rapport with Brind'Amour and confirmed that Brindy will be behind the bench (said "we've got one opening" when asked about assistants and said he asked Brindy which unit he wanted-- PP or PK-- I'll take that as confirmation Brind'Amour is an assistant).

Francis told Gold & Ovies that Rod will be part of the coaching staff, but said it was up to Peters and Rod to figure out in what capacity. And then he went on to say that Peters ran the D & PK in Detroit and we will need to bring in someone to run the D and coach the goalies. Francis also said he has had 3 meetings with E.Staal and there is no doubt that Eric understands that he needs to be the leader on and off the ice and that he needs to set the tone for the other players in how they play in all areas of the game. And that he needs to backcheck has hard as he forechecks and he has to play a 200 foot game.

Well Peters had all the right answers at least up to the point where the stream crapped out completely for me (right after his LA Kings are only team that can fall behind and win quip and the question about what style he would like to see (wide open vs. defensive). Saying and doing are 2 completely different things of course, so let's hope all of the talk becomes action....

The Canes link/stream was AWFUL. I've got WRAL's video on now-- so if anyone wants to get the whole presser.

Here is the entire press conference on YouTube, although it doesn't really begin until the 10-minute mark.

Worth hearing the ending if the streaming (which was awful) let you down.

Got to have a strong defense and control the neutral zone in order to have fun in the offensive zone. I like that approach.

Thanks for posting that link, just watched it. I feel pretty good about this guy....but hey, I liked Muller too! Especially as a player. No offense to Muller, but Peters seems to have more backbone, and is a LOT more confident when he speaks. I really think Muller just never got the players' respect or a handle on leading from the bench. Peters has a LOT more experience than Muller did, and I think that's a huge +.

Just watched the presser on YouTube....really like the look and feel of this guy,he seems like a hard-ass...which is really just what we need around here.Let's hope the country club is closed for good and we can get a hard hat mentality going in this organization.

Yes, thanks for posting the link. The proof will be in the pudding, of course, but one thing that is immediately apparent is how much more comfortable Peters is in front of the media. It's not a crucial skill given what passes for the sports media in a market like this, but I always felt like Muller looked like a deer in the headlights when he was interviewed on camera, even by a lightweight like Chantel.

Bill is much more impressive in how he handles himself. Muller looked pretty lost from the start in my eyes. Peters is all business (might be a joke in there).

Dude sounds like he isn't going to take any shit but still maintain a professional attitude.

Thanks for posting. You sure get the feeling from Peters and Francis that a few of our candy canes are gonna need to bring it every night.

We were saying the same type things when the precious coach was hired. Then the failures and excuses.
Peters gets no excuses. I still, think he's not ready for the canes and staal unless francis and peters really hold staal's skates to the ice.

True enough, but also the same concerns have been voiced (primarily lack of NHL level head coaching experience, although Kirk had none at ANY level, which is a difference). What I am most pleased with is that we didn't get some guy who's going to try to b.s. his way past the media and fan base.

IF that remains to be the case. He could still go to Pittsburgh (unlikely IMO) or get assigned to a non-coach position (likely IMO). Peters is coming from Detroit where the coaching staff is much more regimented than ours has been. I seriously doubt he wants a part time assistant.

What idiot wrote this?

Oh yeah. It was me

At least I got the part about not wanting a part timer correct. Looks like Brindy's in for the full ride this time.

Yeah ... he honestly just looked like a guy who was used to being at a press conference, which comes from having been a head coach for awhile. That really doesn't mean a lot, but you could tell that Peters is a pro. I hope those that are still unhappy because he's not a name coach will settle down once they see this stuff. This is not a man who's unsure what he's doing.

Actually ... If I keep quoting myself, I only took solace in the fact that I admired Muller as a player. I'm always going to want a guy who's been there/done that as a first choice. But this one at least has more than a couple of months worth of experience as the bench boss on some doggone level. Muller had, what? 16 games?

FWIW, I do not believe this rumor-- that Peters had a choice between Pitt and the Canes. Peters may have garnered interest from Pittsburgh, but I can't see Peters being the Pittsburgh option. Although, reportedly Babcock has said RF did a great job courting Peters. Other than being hockey teams that play in the same division, we are different. Pittsburgh is a "win now" franchise. We are a team that's finally getting the re-build we needed years ago. Pittsburgh's ownership is willing to spend the money in a way our budget team will not/cannot do. With Peters, we get a coach who will have opportunity to develop is we re-build. In Pittsburgh, that is not what they are looking for.

Well, I am eating my hat. Elliotte Friedman was on NHL LIve today and said that Bill Peters was the Penguins first choice but the Hurricanes and Ron Francis beat Pittsburgh to the punch. He never said that Peters was offered the job, just that Pittsburgh basically got caught with their pants down. Appears they wanted to interview Willie Desjardins and by that time, RF swooped in and got Peters. That may very well have been what Babcock meant by courting Peters.

It has been a long time since I felt this optimistic about the Hurricanes, but thus far, I like what I heard-- at the press conference and the general praise. Also thrills me to know the Penguins were once again the bridesmaid.

I finally got the time to listen to today's interview and I have to say, I was really impressed. Peters seems to have a deep knowledge of the game and what he wants to do with the Canes team. This guy didn't sound like a new NHL head coach. Words are not actions, but count me among those who are feeling really good about the Canes right now.

Yeah, he said all the right things, but I could tell he was drawing from experience with the responses he gave. He expects a lot, that's for sure, and accountability across the roster is what we need. I think what ultimately sold me on the guy is when he said we are going to practice the way we play, at a very high tempo. He looks like there is a fire burning inside him, a quiet controlled intensity. Plus they both appeared to be chomping at the bit to get started. I'm encouraged.

Oh my. JR is already screwing things up. Love that he is gonezo.

The last several seasons the canes practiced like they played and visa versa.

Yeah, lollygagging around the ice. This is going to be a hustle team or you are going to get hustled right out of the lineup if Bill Peters has his way.
