Claude Julien’s status

Yesterday, Bergevin said it's too soon to know his health status.

More importantly, IMO, it's a matter of does a financially secure 60 yr old Julien decide to enjoy his golden years. Or at least do something less stressful with his life.

I don't think Julien will decide this week.

Being a head coach in a market like Montreal and living daily with that kind of pressure and stress during the season should pretty much make his decision easy.

I think he'll do the Jacques Lemaire thing, where he'll be a sort of coach in the sky that gives feedback and has the ear of the GM. Can take more days off and won't have to stress over every little thing.

RDS had an interview with Alain Vigneault the summer he was fired from Vancouver. He showed a little bit of his home office and he said that (I believe the interview was in early July) normally, he's already got his training camp all figured out in terms of schemes, line-ups, etc. I'd bet you anything that they spend a good chunk of their time studying film, trying to figure out new innovations, looking at any way they can get the max out of their lineup. I don't think NHL head coaches have a real off-season and honestly, at some point when your body's giving you clear signs that it's time to take a step back, he would be foolish not to listen.

Gut feeling tells me he's done as a coach, but will remain as a consultant.

I was thinking the same thing.

If that is the case, would be interesting to see if the promote or hire. Dominique Ducharme? Joel Bouchard?

Realistically, they probably get two weeks of RnR a year. The off season is a 9-5 gig. The regular season is an 8 to midnight gig. Takes its toll.
Obviously, there's nothing else they'd rather do with their time....but at some point it's too much.

Hire. I think they'll go for Pascal Vincent, much to my chagrin. I had completely forgotten about this, but both Ducharme & Bouchard were his assistants while he was the head coach of the Montreal Junior a decade ago.

Ducharme has never been a head coach at the professional level. Only has two years in pro coaching. Not enough, imo.
Bouchard has never coached in the NHL, and like Ducharme, he only has two years of experience coaching the pros.

Pascal Vincent has 9 years of pro experience in the Winnipeg Jets organization. 5 as an NHL assistant, 4 as an AHL head coach.

I kinda sorta hope that they keep Muller with a thought that Julien is coming back at some point.

Maybe...just maybe they will be allowed non french coach

Can't do that, the French sports reporters would call it another grim day in the history of the franchise like they did when they put Randy Cunneyworth in place.

I would do it. I’ve no issue telling them to fuck off.

The key though is that you need to be sure you have a winner on the ice. When the Habs win people don’t care about that stuff. When they lose they care.

Btw, it’s not a coincidence that they haven’t won a cup since implementing this stupid requirement.

Weren’t those Serge Savard’s exact words? 😉

Nah. It’s hard to walk back a rule you made yourself. Bergevin even felt the need to apologize for handing the reins to Muller during an emergency.
