Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

oettinger's looked pretty shaky tbh. i think his overall number is probably accurate.

swayman's getting pumped by florida. we made him look unbeatable.

He looked pretty unbeatable in game 1 against Florida as well though so I don't know if it's as simple as us making him look great.

Seems like pretty solid goaltending all around tbh.

Of course elite skill matter more. Even in the heyday of super elite goalies only Roy led a shitty team to a cup. prime Hasek couldn’t even do it.

Yup goaltending is of course important and you're not winning shit with a below average one. Just cautioning those who oversell it. Or undersell the variability and lack of dependability in their results in a smaller playoff sample. The amount of goalies with reputations of being can't miss stable reliable goalies who grossly underperformed their 2 year averages has been extraordinarily high in the playoffs this year. Not the best year to dunk touting goalie reliability imo.

But regardless I think we all agree samsonov is not the answer. And Woll is way too injury prone. So they'll need a guy and it should probably be someone who is fairly established. Just don't trade a core piece for one.

Hellebuyck got pumped, so there's 1. Sorokin and Ullmark didn't play enough to draw anything resembling a conclusion on. Vasilevsky was below average by his standards, but 5 games is 5 games. I'm not seeing anyone else deemed "reliable" that was markedly worse in the playoffs than the regular season. This imagery you're trying to conjure of the corpses of elite goaltenders splayed all over the landscape after getting dummied in the 1st round is basically 1 guy. Settle down.

Having a good goalie isn't a guarantee, but it's a necessity. There is nothing more powerful in the playoffs than a goalie heater, and bad goalies don't go on playoff heaters.

The other thing is how much does save % even matter. Bob has a + gsax.

Only negative goalies that advanced were Georgiev and Skinner and we all know why those teams advanced.

gsax by game

GM1: -1.14 (L)
GM2: +0.27 (W)
GM3: +0.09 (L)
GM4: -0.80 (L)
GM5: +1.65 (W)
GM6: +2.77 (W)
GM7: +0.90 (L)

?

did you look at your pic?

Andersen
Silovs
Bobrovsky
Skinner
Georgiev

At the end of the 1st round, Freddy and Silovs had significantly higher SV%. They didn't get through the 1st round with a ~.896

Georgiev and Bob did, sure. So 2 of 8 teams that advanced got Samsonov levels of goaltending in the 1st round, sure.

So one thing Ive notice looking around at other teams, Matthews aside, our Core 4 isn’t really that much more talented than the other best teams. But it is the most expensive. And the most imbalanced positionally.

Matthews - Swayman - Barkov - Shesterkin - Robertson - Mackinnon - McDavid
Marner - Pastrnak - Tkachuk - Fox - Heiskanen - Makar - Draisaitl
Willy - McAvoy - Forsling - Panarin- Hintz - Rantanen - Bouchard
Tavares - Marchand - Ekblad - Zibanejad - Oettinger - Toews - Ekholm

All I'll say is this playoff has not convinced me of goaltending being as important as many believe.

For me it's far more important to have a reliable tandem with two guys with the capability of stringing together a stretch of elite games rather than a single guy. You don't necessarily need a goalie that can toss out 300 games of consistency and reliability in the regular season. That was Freddy Andersen and it didn't work if that's where all your marbles are. You want to have a couple of guys that are capable of going on a heater at the right time but maybe aren't putting out 50+ games each season. It's clear that Samsonov is never gonna be one of those guys so I fully support moving on from him.

But you're not gonna win a cup without having top 3-4 skaters in the NHL anyway. That's far more important than having a top 3 goalie (having a top 3 goalie helps but let's pump the brakes in acting like it's mandatory to win). Leafs didn't have a roster with top 3 or 4 skaters this year so it's all moot anyway.

Tldr: just build a super elite team that plays elite in the playoffs too. That's all I ask.
