Drafting History

Figured I'd look back and see how my drafts have went historically. Be prepared for some Blunders!

Farthest back thread I could find 2was for the 2014/2015 Draft, so I'll start from there. I did find a couple earlier draft review threads so I'll post those too.

2010/2011
1st round, pick 1- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Only pick I made. Turned out to be ok. Volcanologist had probably the best pick with Kucherov in the 2nd round. Solid value by TJF taking John Gibson in the 3rd.

2011/2012

I had 0 picks in this draft lol.

2012/2013

2013/2014

2014/2015

1st round, pick 17- Kasperi Kapanen
no 2nd rounder
3rd round, pick 57- Vladimir Tkachev
4th round, pick 66- Tyson Baillie

Kapanen was an ok pick for the slot, the other 2 picks amounted to nothing.

A couple steals/solid picks in that draft from other managers: Tony Deangelo @18 by blueman, Larkin @23 by Kritter, Pastrnak @31 by AXL, Point @50 by LM101.

2015/2016

1st round, pick 8- Pavel Zacha
3rd round, pick 48- Zachary Senyshyn
4th round, pick 68- PA Parentaeau (from protected list)

Bad, bad draft here. Zacha could still turn things around and become a solid player, but time is ticking there. I thought at the time I was getting good value taking a 1st round player in the 3rd with Senyshyn. I wasn't. He may become a 4th liner, but it was a wasted pick.

Strong picks in this draft include Artemi Panarin @24 by Matrim, Thomas Chabot @34 by Artnes, Sebastian Aho @52 by HP and Kirill Kaprizov @71 by Mindz.

2016/2017

1st round, pick 3- Jesse Puljujarvi
2nd round, pick 37- Yegor Korshkov
3rd round, pick 43- Chad Krys
4th round, pick 78- Teddy Purcell (from protected list)

I think this was the start of my long, 4 year rebuild. Not a great start. Puljujarvi may still turn into something. Korshkov has some hope, but probably wont be fantasy relevant. Krys has good AHL numbers but probably is too small to make the NHL.

Strong picks in this draft include Charlie McAvoy @17 by Not your Stepan Stone, Alex Debrincat @23 by NYSS and Adam Fox @39 by BG's 86ers.

2017/2018

1st round, Pick 2- Nolan Patrick
1st round, Pick 3- Cale Makar
1st round, Pick 5- Timothy Liljegren
2nd round, Pick 23- Jake Oettinger
2nd round, Pick 29- Connor Timmins

Ugh, this draft has proven rough. Effectively 5 1st round picks. Patrick has had some bad injury luck but could still turn out. I probably make that pick again. Makar was a good pick even though he isn't on my team any more. With the Liljegren pick I was on the fence between him and Heiskanen. I was too caught up in the Leaf hype and decided to go with the homer pick. So far that has been a big mistake. Oettinger looks like he could be a good pick and should hopefully solidify my goaltending in 2 years or so. Timmins was pick that looks like it can still be decent.

Strong picks in this draft include Elias Pettersson @12 by Blueman and Martin Necas @16 by Deckie. Special highlight to Jonas here, who looked to have a really strong draft with Yamamoto @14, Klostin @16, Robert Thomas @20, Anothony Cirelli @56 and Max Comtois @58.

2018/2019

1st round, pick 2- Andrei Svechnikov
1st round, pick 9- Adam Boqvist
2nd round, pick 20- Dominik Bokk
2nd round, pick 28- Ty Dellandrea

Very happy with my draft here. Svech looks to be a beast and I have high hopes for Boqvist. Bokk and Dellandrea are off my team but I think they were solid picks at the time.

Hard to really judge strong/steal picks this soon, but Perunovich in the 4th round for Deckie looks really solid so far.

2019/2020

1st round, pick 1- Jack Hughes
2nd round, pick 20- Philip Broberg
2nd round, pick 31- Nicholas Robertson
4th round, pick 66- Alex Beaucage

Like my picks here. Broberg and Robertson look to be really strong picks for their slots.

Again too soon to really pick steals/strong picks from this draft.

2020/2021

1st round, Pick 4- Marco Rossi
2nd round, Pick 21- Noel Gunler
3rd round, pick 51- Daniel Gushchin
3rd round, pick 54- Veeti Miettenen
4th round, pick 59- Jordan Greenway

I'm on the Rossi Hype train so I am really happy with the pick at 4. Gunler has a lot of potential, so I figured I'd take the high risk/high reward pick there. Will see how my other picks shake out.

Overall, I feel like my drafting has gotten better over the years. I've had a lot of busts and a lot of bad luck on higher picks lol. I still haven't (that I can find), had a later round pick that really took off. Would be nice to have one of those work out for me lol.

Now if we look at my trade history, there are probably a lot more blunders in there. I think I've done the best for myself in this league working the waivers and finding value in undrafted free agents.

2012/2013

Tanner Pearson
Erik Gustafsson
Alex Mallet
Colton Sissons

Honestly, considering I was brand new to hockey dynasty I did pretty good here. Outside of Mallet, all have had pretty solid careers so far. None of them with my roster, but still not bad.

I picked up Torey Krug but dropped him for some reason. Oops.

2013/2014

Anthony Duclair
Jordan Subban

Both 2nd rounders. Duclair took a little while to figure it out, but he was a solid pick in the 2nd round. Subban never figured out his own end of the ice. I don't see anything else on my team I recognize as being drafted.

2014/2015

1st round, pick 10- Julius Honka
1st round, pick 13 - Brendan Perlini
1st round, pick 14 - Josh ho Sang
1st round, pick 15 - Ivan Barbashev
4th round, pick 65 - Jake Walman

Grade: C

So good news/bad news situation. All the players chosen have made the NHL debut. Bad news is none of them have made any real impact in the NHL at a meaningful way. Honka is a real heartbreaker. Thought he had EK potential and it hasn't worked out. Perlini has had his moments, and Ho-Sang is stranded on Long Island. Barbashev is fine, but nothing special. I think I got decent trade value a few years later when I started to build towards competing, but overall an underwhelming draft with 4 picks in the top 15.

2015/2016

1st round, pick 11 - Timo Meier
2nd round, pick 22 - Jeremy Bracco
3rd round, pick 57- Ryan Pilon

Still love the Meier pick. Pure goal scorer who should get increased minutes for the Sharks going forward. Bracco has had nice AHL numbers but otherwise hasn't made a deep Leafs forward lineup and is getting a fresh start in Carolina. Feel like he ends up in the KHL. Pilon was a real kick in the nuts, retiring the same summer he was drafted with no warning. Just a waste of a pick.

Grade: C+

2016/2017

1st round, pick 2- Patrik Laine
2nd round, pick 21 - Max Jones
2nd round, pick 33 - Adam Mascherin
2nd round, pick 36 - Henrik Borgstrom

Laine was the obvious pick here as he's been pretty good. Traded him for Malkin a few years and can't really complain. Max Jones has been meh, and I'll never forgive myself for drafting him over Debrincat. Thought he'd excel in this format, and he still may, but he's been a slow developer. Mascherin is a sniper with below average wheels, probably an AHL/up and down guy, I still have enough belief in Borgstom to have reacquired him here and own him in another league. Will be interesting to see what happens to him in Florida. Kinda hope they trade him.

Grade: B

2017/2018

1st round, pick 15- Vadim Shipachyov
1st round, pick 16 - Martin Necas
2nd round, pick 36- Josh Norris
3rd round, pick 45 - Zach Aston Reese
3rd round, pick 59 - Alexei Lipanov

Man this draft will haunt me forever. I was just starting to turn the corner and decided to take Shipachyov, who I figured would be a top 6 at worst player out the gate for the expansion Golden Knights. Instead they fucked him around in the minors and he whined all the way back to Russia. Absolute wasted pick. Would have picked Robert Thomas or Klim Kostin here most likely if I knew that was gonna happen. Ugh.

Otherwise, I got Necas and Norris which is a pretty nice haul. Traded up to get Norris and he's proved me right. Reese is a nice depth guy and Lipanov doesn't seem to be anything but overall I thought I did well here minus the Shipachyov disaster.

Grade: B-

2018/2019

3rd round, pick 50 - Daniel Brickley
4th round, pick 60 - Jonathan Davidsson
4th round, pick 61 - Scott Perunovich
4th round, pick 60 - Antti Suomela
4th round, pick 68 - Matthieu Perreault

Brickley looks like trash, but pretty sure I got something for him once I figured that out. Davidsson looks like a solid prospect. Perunovich had a stellar career in college and should be able to step in very soon in St Louis. Suomela and Perrault were just cheap depth for a team trying to compete, nothing really to see here. Not a bad draft for a team trying to stay in the money.

Grade: B

2019/2020

3rd round, pick 56 - Tyler Toffoli (unprotected)
4th round, pick 58 - Nick Foligno (unprotected)
4th round, pick 59- Nikita Alexandrov
4th round, pick 60 - Maxim Cahjkovic
4th round, pick 68 - Andrew Shaw
4th round, pick 76 - Brent Seabrook

Went more help now pieces but I nailed TT and Foligno and Seabrook was part of a deal that got me Giordano. Shaw was poop and both the QMHJHL Euros I picked looked very good in their draft +1.

Grade: A

2020/2021

1st round, Pick 17- Connor Zary
2nd round, Pick 21- Roni Hirovanen
3rd round, pick 51- Shakir Mukhamadullin
3rd round, pick 54- Carter Savoie
4th round, pick 59- Pius Suter

Sigh. Little bit disappointed. I missed out on a couple of players I liked, but overall I'm pretty happy to get what I got where I got it. Zary at 17 was pretty nice and Hirovanen and the big Russian Fuck are guys with big potential. Savoie was great value where picked as well. Getting a NHL ready guy in the 4th is a nice coup with Suter, but I thought I could have done better. Zion Nybeck is a guy I passed on multiple times and I think I'll regret it. I tried to acquire a pick to get Mikko Lehtonen, but Habsy and I had a broken fax machine situation :ROFLMAO:

I don't want to get into my draft history (which includes winning the lottery in the Yakupov draft), but I will tell you a story about the first season trade deadline.

It may have been the only time the rule was enforced, but in the looming offseason we were being forced to comply with a goalie hoarding rule where you could not keep more than one goalie who had played more than 50 games (or something like that).

I had drafted Rinne early in the inaugural draft, but also grabbed Mike Smith in the last round. Mike Smith had been playing for Tampa, suffered some concussion issues and had been replaced by 41 year-old Dwayne Roloson in the play-offs. Well, Mike Smith signed with Phoenix in the offseason and played 67 games in 2011-12 (.930SV%) and was well on his way to being traded by the Eighty-Sixers.

At that time, neither Montana or Habspatrol could afford their own team, so they split the cost of a franchise and each pretended to not be the other's assistant GM.

An offer was presented, including previously drafted Mike St. Croix (son of former NHL goaltender and Leafs goalie coach Rick St. Croix), a 2nd rounder in the 2012 entry draft, and a goalie prospect. There was a choice of two goalies, one was a recent Swedish import that played the season as an NHL back up (.908SV%), the other a prospect goalie playing in the AHL getting cups of coffee in the NHL (.899SV%).

It was an excellent offer, given it was a trade that had to be made. The only thing left to decide was which goalie was to be agreed upon. Would it be Henrik Karlsson (who would only play 9 more NHL games in his career) or Ben Bishop (who is still playing after 10 seasons)?

It was a tougher decision than it sounds.

Anyway...

After 9 seasons, and several trades - Mike Smith's legacy lives on in Eighty-Sixers prospects Tristan Jarry and Jonatan Berggren. And while Montana lost the power struggle for team control to Habspatrol, the team has still hooked up trades with the Eighty-Sixers including moving HP up in the 2015 draft to grab Noah Juulsen, fleecing BG for Backes/Petry and most recently relieving us of another goalie in Juuse Saros.

You got a ton of details wrong... Hairnova took over Montana's team. I took over someone else's shit team.

2011
#2 - Adam Larsson
#8 - Mark Scheifele
#27 - Joe Morrow
#35 - Dmitri Jaskin
#36 - Michael St. Croix
#51 - Henrik Karlsson
#57 - Robbie Russo

Gross... Scheifele was a good pick but otherwise... woof.

2014-15
#21 - Nikita Scherbak
#26 - Ilya Kovalchuk
#42 - Jiri Sekac
#46 - Christian Folin

Oof - Now I know why I always trade away my picks. I believe I held onto Kovalchuk for like 3 years after he left.

2015-16
#18 - Daniel Sprong
#38 - Noah Juulsen
#52 - Sebastian Aho
#65 - Nicolas Meloche

Aho at 52 was obviously a great pick. Too bad I traded him away shortly after his stock started to rise. Otherwise... another horrible draft.

2016-17

#52 - Rem Pitlick
#65 - Scott Hartnell

Still waiting on Pitlick to breakout! Hartnell I believe was a decent contributor for me that year... but yeah... nothing to see here.

2017-18

#35 - Jaret Anderson-Dolan
#39 - Aleksi Heponiemi
#42 - Mason Shaw
#60 - Shane Bowers
#72 - Michael Frolik
#77 - Antoine Vermette

Here we go... Those top 4 guys are going to be something!!! Seriously though... there's a bit of potential there, but there were some better options behind the guys I took.

2018-19

#11 - Evan Bouchard
#14 - Joseph Veleno
#67 - Semyon Varlamov
#70 - Cam Hillis

Really happy with this draft. All good picks where I got them.

2019-20

#4 - Alex Turcotte
#5 - Cole Caufield
#23 - Connor McMichael
#24 - Raphael Lavoie
#46 - Jackson LaCombe
#57 - Pyotr Kochetkov

I believe I killed it in this draft. Although, I'm sure I thought that a year after some of my previous drafts too. Turcotte looks legit af and absolutely looks like the right pick at #4. Caufield at #5 looked like a bit of a homer pick at the time, but I truly believed that he's a world class sniper and is going to score a lot of goals in the NHL. After a successful rookie season in the NCAA I feel even better about that pick. Connor McMicheal had a monster post draft season and that looks like a very selection at 23. Lavoie at 24 feels like another good pick... obviously these guys have a couple years yet before we will really know.

2020-21

#5 - Cole Perfetti
#60 - Luke Evangelista
#71 - Zayde Wisdom

Absolutely love Perfetti. He has elite upside and I think his floor is quite high. I also feel that Evangelista and Wisdom were bargains where I got them. I think they both have real shots at being NHL top 6 players.

Alright here it is, keep in mind that I drafted a pretty good team and contended until 2015 when I went full rebuild.

2011
3.44(BG) Evgeny Grachev
4.70(BG) Richard Panik

2012
1.1(BG) Nail Yakupov (350)
2.22(BG) Pontus Aberg (132)
2.33(HPM) Mark Jankowski (208)
3.42(BG) Cristoval Nieves (76)
4.65(BG)Troy Bourke (0)

Won the lottery in this offseason after an injury riddled season that had me finishing 2nd last. Winning the lottery was lucky, winning it in 2012 was probably not.

2013
2.34(BG) Justin Bailey (65)
3.54(BG) Steven Santini (116)
4.74(BG) Hudson Fasching (22)
4.79(HPM) Tristan Jarry (62*)

Traded my first in this season in a deal for Kyle Okposo.

2014
1.12(LM) Nick Ritchie (294*)
2.36(BG) Jaromir Jagr
4.70(JCY) Mason McDonald (0)
4.71(AXL) Marek Mazanec
4.76(BG) Matt Irwin

Traded up two spots to select Nick Ritchie who I mistakenly thought would help me keep contending - assuming that he was more NHL ready than his peers. The rest of this draft was basically just filling roster holes to compete.

2015
3(MTM) Shane Doan
3(KB) Connor Murphy
4(KTR) Roope Hintz (118*)
4(BG) Erik Cernak (125)

Traded my first for Cody Franson in an effort to keep climbing the standings (finished in the money).

2016
1.11(BG) Logan Brown (29*)
2.39(HN) Adam Fox (70*)

This was the humble beginning of the rebuild. Traded up to grab Fox in the second round here.

2017
1.4(BG) Gabe Vilardi (10*)
2.24(BG) Nicolas Hague (*38)
4.63(BG) Nick Cousins
4.78(ME) Chris Tierney

Vilardi looks to have been a reach at 4, and injuries have really slowed his development - but he showed flashes of the player could still be.

2018
1.4(BG) Oliver Wahlstrom (9*)
1.7(Bull) Noah Dobson (34*)
1.15(HP) Joel Farabee (52*)
2.23(BG) Jonatan Berggren (0*)
3.42(BG) Calen Addison (0*)
3.50(HN) Niklas Nordgren (0*)

This was what should be the real kickstarter to the rebuild, with potentially 3 or 4 NHL pieces on the rise (*hopefully). Dobson/Farabee looking good in their NHL debuts, and Berggren percolating overseas with a good chance to crack the Red Wings roster next season.

2019
1.2(BG) Kaapo Kakko (66*)
1.19(MNIJ) Thomas Harley (0)
2.22(BG) Philip Tomasino (0)
2.38(MNIJ) Samuel Fagemo (0)
4.60(BG) Tyler Bozak
4.62(SE) Ilya Mikheyev (39*)

Won the lottery (again) moving up from 3rd overall to 2nd. Another draft with multiple 1st and 2nd round picks. Kakko with a disappointing rookie season, and Harley/Tomasino looking like good picks in their draft spots. Soup-erman was a nice bonus for a 4th round flyer.

2020
1.6(BG) Lucas Raymond
2.22(HP) Mavrik Bourque
2.24(BG) Brendan Brisson
3.43(BG) Helge Grans
4.62(BG) Andreas Athanasiou

Draft lottery moved me down a spot this offseason, but still got a player that I had rated highly. The Bourque/Brisson picks were about market value. Grabbing an unsigned Athanasiou was a risk, but given what was available (kids with middle six upside) I decided to grab the guy who has already reached that upside, but had a shitty year and wasn't offered a QO.

--Overall I think I've learned a lot over the last 10 years, and hopefully some draft success/luck will have my team back in the money soon.

Not going to go through all my drafts.
But I would like to post my best draft, and not bragging, likely the best draft anyone in the league has ever had.
Yes, i traded away a bunch of stuff to get extra picks early.

2015-2016 Draft

1. Connor McDavid
3. Mitch Marner
6. Ivan Provorov
14 Kyle Connor
23. Brock Boeser
43 Christian Fischer
