For Borje - The Toronto Maple Leafs 2023 Stanley Cup Champions Thread

I get wanting to avoid certain matchups and wanting your elite defensive forwards if you have them up against the other teams stars.

And when you look at the leafs roster it’s like ok - you have probably the most well rounded elite C in the world on the first line, a selke finalist 100 point winger on the second line and a former selke and conn smythe winner centering your third line and keefe is like “kampf, get out there vs tkachuck”

The definition of galaxy braining the situation

I get the thesis. If Kampf can eliminate Tkachuk then you have your three talented lines out there doing damage vs inferior talent. What could go wrong?

Well,

1. Kampf ends up playing way more than he should, and
2. Kampf eliminating Tkachuk is an absolutely braindead moronic dream

The nice thing about Kampf on the 4th line is if he gets stuck out against a top line you aren't too worried about it (as opposed to Spezza).

But that is very different from lets intentionally play him every dzone draw against the other teams top line. It makes no sense. And that is why you got ROR. Why are you trying to find ROR's line favourable matchups?

Honestly probably because his line has needed it for whatever reason. That line as constructed is not quite working.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - O'Reilly - Nylander
Bunting - Kampf - Acciari

Jarnkrok and Kerfoot as the 10th and 11th.

i've bolded the ones that are concerning to me.

a lot of this is likely from Keefe matching even more obsessively than ever, of course.

ROR and Gio from an eye test perspective have been the biggest drops offs for me. Both have been plain bad.

Holl might’ve been taking a disproportionate amount of blame for their pairing being shit against Tampa.

And kinda looking like we might’ve blown out Gio by relying on him too heavily in the regular season.

ROR needs to play a heap better before I’m convinced he’s that much better right now. Though he will win the FO more.

Matthews needs to be used more and not hidden from any fucken match up. I agree with others that he’s our Bergeron type that you actually match that top line up against theirs cause 99 percent of the time you are winning that battle and we have the JT line (and hopefully ROR line shows up) to take advantage of most teams that don’t have our depth.
