Free Agent Frenzy

The Canes entire 4th line has a $5.7 million AAV. $1.45 million more than Colton Sissons's new AAV with the Leafs.

The Leafs already have Steve Lorentz making a reasonable $1.35 million AAV for 2 more seasons. It feels like the Leafs front office started spending money just because they had the cap space not because the players they were acquiring actually make the team better (although its hard to be worse than they were last season). That approach is the total opposite of what the Canes do.

I heard Carlson rejected an offer from the Canes at 11.45. Awfully quiet after that.
Tampa just doesn’t have the money to go higher than that and Carolina shouldn’t be going that high … but have the luxury of doing so. So everybody gets to wait and see. I think the others interested in Carlson have moved on except Philly … and Carlson would almost certainly prefer Carolina or Tampa.

Looks like the Rangers have traded Trocheck to Utah. Waiting for details.

Wait … looks like Utah gave up Sean Durzi a prospect and a 3rd rounder. Durzi should fit right into NY’s defense, probably a second pair guy for them. They said the D group was a priority and this addresses a need more than any free agent would have done.

Utah will miss Durzi. Their D sort of fell apart when he got hurt in the playoffs, but they were over matched against Vegas either way. Tro gives them solid 2 way play up the middle, which they also badly needed.

Honestly, Utah could still use KK. They have a lot of guys who CAN play center but maybe shouldn’t. I thought they should have a taken a stab at him at the deadline this past season.

FWIW, giving Jenner that much money means Washington is down to $3 million and change of Cap space. Not sure how or if they can bring Ovechkin back at that kind of number. Adding Kyrou and Tuch may just mean that they’re not going to try.

Canes have officially lost two minor league free agents. Fensore signed with Colorado and Ryan Suzuki signed with Ottawa. Both are 2-way deals. In both cases, there was no real path to the big club here. Bon chance fellas.

Edmonton, fresh off of ditching Nurse, has signed Ryan Shea to a 5 year deal at a $4 mil AAV. He had a fluke uptick in counting stats with Pittsburgh last year but is an otherwise solid enough bottom 4 defenseman who moves the puck well. Given the market, this was an OK deal I think. I understand Shea was a backup plan for Tampa, should they miss on Carlson.

OK, so our friend Fayettenam has pointed out that it’s a bit head spinning to follow trades and signings in the same thread. So, let’s try and keep this thread for new signings and put trade chatter in the NHL Misc thread. Cool?
