Gadget player trade talk

Just for the fun of of it, who would you trade Hutson 1-1 for, against another defenseman in the league, considering the age.

Makar for sure. Hugues, yes. Heiskonen, probably.

Who else?

There's a few defensemen in the league I wouldn't trade Hutson to because Hutson's 21 and the other d-man is 28 or older, therefore their age disqualifies them automatically. If, say, Roman Josi was 27 instead of 33? Yeah, I'd trade Hutson in a heartbeat.

Looking at every d-man who received a Norris vote last season:

Quinn Hughes: Yes
Josi: No, only because of his age
Makar: Yes
Fox: Yes
Bouchard: No
Hedman: No, see Josi
Morrissey: No, outlier year & age
Dobson: Probably.
Forsling: Sitting the fence, but leaning no. Ask me tomorrow, my thoughts might change.
Heiskanen: Yes
McAvoy: Yes
Slavin: No
Dahlin: Yes

If I look at the Calder votes in the last 4 years:
Faber: Yes
Luke Hughes: Yes
Mintyukov: If he was a RHD, I would. But since he's not, no.
Kesselring & Nemec: No

Power: No
Sanderson: Yes
P-O Joseph: No

Seider: .................................maybe. Fence sitting. Leaning yes. As I re-read this, I changed my mind. No.
Carrier, Liljegren & Fehevary: No

Ty Smith, K'Andre Miller, Artem Zub, Zach Whitecloud: No

Other names:
Devon Toews: No
Dougie Hamilton: No
Shea Theodore: No
Alex Pietrangelo: No
John Carlson: No
David Jiricek: lol no

Really appreciate the thoughts you put into it.

Dahlin, yes
Fox, maybe but he won’t come here.
Faber maybe, but I think I like Hutson better.
McAvoy I’m on the fence

The one thing with this exercise is the situation the Habs are in.

If the Habs are contenders on the same level as Colorado, there's a few more Yes I would put on that list. Josi & Hedman become a Yes. Forsling might be a Yes.

But because the Habs are bad and won't be contenders for a while, trading Hutson for players in their late 20s or early 30s makes no sense.

Hutson's been much better than I ever imagined he would be, so I'll wear that L on him. I still don't think he's going to do well in the playoffs because Quinn Hughes hasn't done well in the playoffs and he's considerably better than Hutson. My concern about Hutson has been repeated for years: There's a reason the NHL isn't littered with small d-men. You have to be big and you have to be strong, especially when the playoffs come around.

So for a guy who might be a great regular season player, I don't know how good he'll be in the playoffs. If the Habs were contenders, and I can get Josi/Hedman/Forsling in their last good year or two? In hopes of making a strong push to win the Cup? I would definitely do it.

Love it. But for the sake of discussion, it’s a right here right now topic. Is there more than 5 Ds that you would trade 1-1 with Hutson? I’m leaning no.

I have 10.

Quinn & Luke Hughes, Makar, Adam Fox, Noah Dobson, Heiskanen, McAvoy, Dahlin, Faber, Jake Sanderson.

That's it.

(This is not taking into consideration contracts or whether they're willing to play here, just player for player)

Fuck it lets keep him his whole career. So fun to watch.
I actually share that view, even if meant partially in jest. He’s also going to be one of the top PP QB’s in the league, so even if there are better all-around d-men than him, which there obviously are, I don’t care. He has a skill set that results in goals. That’s not easy to find. I’d trade him for Makar, Hughes and maybe Dahlin, that’s it.

P.S. BU won a ton of games with him there.

Edmonton got to the finals last year largely due to a 30 percent power play. I don’t think you realize how important Hutson is.

Or maybe you don't realize how much better McDavid, Draisaitl, Bouchard and Hyman are to the guys we have on this team that would allow them to reach a 30% PP.

Well obviously but without a QB your PP will suck. Take Bouchard off that PP and it will be considerably worse. You just don’t like Hutson. I knew two years ago after I saw him play in person at BU that he was the real deal. He's the real deal, regardless of his size or how others his size have fared in the NHL.
