Here we go

Laine needs a good draping tonight. I think Leafs are going to fly, but Laine did put up 8 points in the pre-season....gotta mitigate that threat.

As much as Laine is a beast, only two of his pre-season points (and one of his goals) were at even strength. The rest were all on the power-play. So half the battle tonight will be staying out of the penalty box as much as possible.

And I'll be interested to see who gets the matchup against Laine at even strength. Kadri, or Matthews?

Game might get ugly but will be close or OT/shootouts which we suck at

It just dawned on me that the Leafs/Jets season opener is likely due to the Matthews/Laine 'rivalry'. Seems a little... forced.

There is definitely a rivalry between the two fan bases with these two players.
I dunno. Maybe there is with the Jets fan base. They did the whole "Laine's better" chant last year, and their local media and fans seemed pretty desperate to anoint Laine as the better player in the first half of last season.

But with Winnipeg being a Western conference team with no historical rivalry with the Leafs, and with Matthews shaping up to be potentially the greatest Leaf of all-time, how many Leaf fans really give two shits about the Jets, or about how Laine turns out?

I don't really think Leafs fans care that much. We needed a number one centre desperately and got him. Jets fans on the other hand being a smaller city and franchise probably care. Laine may care but he hasn't really shown it.

Anyhow, Leafs vs. Habs would've been a good starter, Leafs vs. Sens would've been OK, Leafs vs. Oilers would've been good; other than that really, I don't have an issue with Laine vs. Matthews. For this year, it's certainly more spicy than Leafs vs. any other original six teams, or a random US team.

I got the Leafs @2.02. Dont think youll get better odds on them all season. Like another poster mentioned, gotta stay outta the box to keep Laine off the scoresheet. Tonight is the dawn of a new era. A Dynasty. Go Leafs Go.

I like to pretend I don't care, but I'd love to see Laine get crushed.

Oh, I'd love to see him get crushed tonight.

And of course, I want to see Matthews score more.

But if Laine turns into a 50-goal scoring superstar this year, I'm cool with it. Makes the league more interesting.

There's a bit of a rivalry or the potential for one bc of the Matthews/Laine thing and the fact our provinces share a border.

Yeah, there's no rivalry from our end. This is all Jets fans trying to pretend they can walk beside the big dog while the big dog just takes a dump at the MTS Centre and moves on. Matthews is a dominant franchise centre, the Leafs are on the upswing and meanwhile, I guess the Jets can console themselves with their horsefly count when they're out of the playoffs again.

5-3 Leafs.
