GDT #16 Feb 15th 7PM -"Somebody forgot about defence" VS The Team 30th in GA

Hey, if he reaches out into the market and pulls a solid goalie out of free agency whenever we need, that makes my point moot. To date though it's been his most obvious weakness and one that other than the Campbell move (which was pretty fucking late), I haven't seen him make much of a move to fix it. As nice as it is to turn a late rounder into an Engvall, I'm entirely good with risking not getting that to pull a goalie out of the draft every 3-5 years. I don't think it's crazy to say that goaltending has been our biggest weakness as an organization over the last 20 years and there's an obvious reason for that. We haven't drafted an NHL calibre goalie since Reimer in 2006 (Rask was 05).

In the last 25 years, we've drafted 3 goalies that I'd call "NHL Calibre". Rask, Reimer, and Tellqvist with Tellan obviously being on the very lowest end of that. Over that time to fix our goaltending we've traded: Rask, 1st & 2nd (Freddy), 2nd (Bernier), 3rd (Campbell) and never really fixed our goaltending for more than a short period of time. Shit, never fixed it more than one of our few goalie draft picks fixed it. If we're going to puke out a high pick ever few years to fix our goaltending, why not just stream less valuable picks every year? At least then we get the benefit of their ELC years.

So take one high OR past the top 100 and let Dubas continue his (it's early but what's looked like) magic with 2nd and 3rds? That's what we did this year, think I'm good with that.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Make a goalie list and starting the 4th round, consider the fuck out of that list each time your turn comes up. Unless there's a skater that you're dying to add at that slot, take the highest rated goalie on your list.

and to my point...yeah AA is in the KHL and not looking out of place at 19 yrs old. That's a good use of a 106th overall pick. Do that same thing, every year.

A nice bonus about the European goalie picks is just how long you get to hang on to their rights before you decide whether or not to invest an ELC in them, and that you don't have to worry about a lack of space for them in the Marlie crease.

Which works even better when you consider that Europe turns out more goalies than NA does now as well.

If Canada is going to call another hockey summit anytime soon it should be to figure out why we can't teach people to stop the fucking puck anymore.
