to be honest the "mid 4" after the Big 4 has actually been good overall, with only Domi struggling.
5v5
Knies: 21gms, 13:29 (-1.4dzs%), 52.8xgf% (-0.1rel), 2.02ap/60
McMann: 21gms, 12:31 (+1.5dzs%), 48.3xgf% (-2.4rel), 1.60ap/60
Domi: 19gms, 12:29 (-0.3dzs%), 46.9xgf% (-4.2rel), 1.15ap/60
Pacioretty: 13gms, 10:34 (-1.1dzs%), 59.4xgf% (+0.0rel), 2.19ap/60
So Domi not getting it done, though a lot of that might just be him not being able to hack it at C. I'm guessing Domi gets back on track soon enough tho.
Patches was always one of the candidates to win one of these depth roles and he did it easily with some excellent play, which was also helped by his competition sucking balls (i.e. holmberg/robertson).
Now the bottom 5 hasn't been as good, but a lot of that is coach being addicted to the shittiest 4th line he can make with this roster. Hoepfullyt he leafs' play without Kampf and Reaves has helped with his withdrawal pains and sobered him up a bit.
If we ever get healthy we only need one more top-9 guy. Then we can debate what kind of 4th line is best.
Unfortunately the two guys who had the best chance and opportunity to earn that spot have been dreadful.
Guys with top-9 upside:
Holmberg: 21gms, 11:00 (+3.2dzs%), 42.4xgf% (-6.2rel), 0.52ap/60
Robertson: 20gms, 10:36 (-1.4dzs%), 42.4xgf% (-6.6rel), 0.57ap/60
Minten: 4gms, 10:52 (+3.8dzs%), 32.3xgf% (-18.0rel), 2.76ap/60
Steeves: 4gms, 10:35 (+4.9dzs%), 47.8xgf% (-1.8rel), 0.00ap/60
Grebenkin: 4gms, 8:38 (-1.9dzs%), 53.0xgf% (+4.1rel), 0.00ap/60
Nylander: 3gms, 7:48 (-6.3dzs%), 52.6xgf% (+3.1rel), 0.00ap/60
Holmberg and Robby have been inexcusably awful. I'm not sure exactly how good Minten and Grebs have actually been so far but they've been a bit easier on my eyes (test) at least. Steeves and Butterface have been fine i think but nothing too notable - though even that's better than much of the competition.
Strictly 4th liners:
Kampf: 18gms, 9:47 (+6.5dzs%), 44.9xgf% (-3.3rel), 0.68ap/60
Dewar: 7gms, 9:45 (+4.8dzs%), 53.0xgf% (+2.1rel), 0.00ap/60
Lorentz: 23gms, 9:05 (+6.4dzs%), 51.3xgf% (+1.6rel), 0.72ap/60
Reaves: 16gms, 7:49 (+6.5dzs%), 46.5xgf% (-2.4rel), 0.24ap/60
If coach is going to insist on playing an entirely unskilled 4th line the least he could to is make sure both Lorentz and Dewar are on it. Those two are at least holding their own out there in tough usage even if they have no offense to speak of. Reaves should obviously never play again and Kampf should be out too.
Scary thing tho is based on recent lineups I think coach is thinking about playing all 4 of these guys going forward, with Lorentz on the 3rd line.
