GDT #33: 24/12/20 - The Poor Dumb Ednas

The Poor Dumb Ednas are having another "disappointing" year, and have lost a million in a row.

Which means they're due against our Leafs of course.

These numbers used to feel right, but they're totally useless now.

A totally off Matty is 27 while firing on all cylinders Marner is 19? And Nylander half of Matty?

Throw these stupid ratings in the trash.

A totally off (aka clearly injured) Matthews is still a real gud #1C

How does a 10 goal and sub PPG performance get him miles ahead of Marner with his 40+ points and well above PPG with the same 10 goals?

Doms are meant to be predictive so it's not just a report on how he's played this year, but takes past data into account to attempt to project future performance. Matthews being super fucking elite at the most important skater slot in hockey prior to his injury fucked 1st half still has the projection system suggesting that he's likely to continue being way better in the future. Marner has been better for the last 30 games, yeah. But the gap was way bigger previous to those ~30 games.

I would also be remiss if I didn't point out an adorable quirk of language here as well.

Auston Matthews: .96ppg "sub PPG Performance"
John Tavares: .94ppg "Tavares doing his incredible PPG thing yet again!"
Are they the same person?

Tavares pacing for PPG and 40 goals in year 7 of his deal at age 34 is quite amazing.

Matthews pacing to like 35 goals and 80 points when he's capable of 70 goals alone is crap.

Of course you know this, but the hatred is just too tough to see past.

I'm just pointing out a clearly inconsistent use of language from you, that's all. You screech about Matthews every time he's hurt, and offer to hold John's nuts to ensure his taint gets the appropriate amount of red light.

lol, and settle down with this amazing talk. The only goal scoring category he's in the top 10 in is empty netters. 12 non EN goals is good from him at this point, I'll take it, but settle down with amazing. That's tied with the also 34 year old Matt Duchene, the 36 yr old Brad Marchand, 1 fewer than the 34 yr old who replaced him as captain in NYI, tied with your buddy Toffoli, 1 more than Naz.

You settle down. He's been awesome, playing almost as well as he did in his first year here. You seem to ignore his xg numbers for some strange reason. And the fact that he's got 11 of his 15 goals at even strength. Two things you love to harp on about when it suits you. Again, get past the hate and enjoy it. You don't need to find an opportunity every other day to pick a fight about him. He's the best UFA signing we've ever had, and you should get comfy with him sticking around for more after this year.

As for inconsistency, you judge players based on their own abilities. Tavares has always been a PPG guy, and so to still be pulling it off at age 34 is definitely awesome. Matthews being a 30 goal PPG guy is terrible by his standards. If Dewar suddenly put up 80 points, wouldn't we all be saying that's fucking amazing?? Of course we would, but it's not fucking amazing if talking about MacKinnon or Kucherov.

25 whole games as just a solid 1st liner this year don't completely change that he's proven he's super duper elite over an 8yr career now.

If all you care about when evaluating a player is their performance over the first 40% of this season only, then...

Marner 32gms, +6.7 (+17.2 pace)
Tavares 31gms, +6.2 (+16.0 pace)
Nylander 32gms, +4.5 (+11.5 pace)
Matthews 23gms, +3.6 (+12.8 pace)
