GDT #4: 2026/10/06 - panac

To be paid another 5 million for a farewell tour of a season he felt he was owed despite it being obvious that he was cooked.

Probably also expected a guarantee that he’d be a fixture on PP1 all season so that he’d have the best possible chance of getting the 30-or-so points he needed to limp over the 1000 point mark.

is it totally unreasonable to think you'd get a chance to get to 1000 points on a bottom-feeding team you've played for your entire career? If that was you, you'd just meekly say yeah I suck, thanks.

Even if he knew he was toast and shouldn't have gotten that last year, it does seem like Chayka and the org could've probably handled it better.

The org was trying to compete. And the order to axe doan most likely came from the top.
Yup. This is well documented.

"The time has come for us to move on and to focus on our young, talented group of players and our very bright future," Coyotes owner, chairman and governor Andrew Barroway said. "This was a very difficult decision given what Shane has done for the Coyotes and his unparalleled importance to the organization."

Doan was garbage his last year. It happens to everyone that doesn’t know when to step away on their own.

He was delusional and thought he was owed something he wasn’t. He wasn’t going to take the news well no matter what Chayka did. A breakfast is way better than most players get.

Chayka wined and dined Berube for like 3 hours, Berube got horny and thought he was getting a second date, and then got fired a week later. He's cut throat. But their GMs have been too nice for too long, so I don't mind the change.

Don't think we have the full story on the doan thing, but regardless, the actual decision itself was clearly not unreasonable. And clearly ownership made the call or at the very least was a big part of it.

It’s perfectly understandable for Doan to want to keep playing, to want another NHL payday, to want another opportunity to hit the 1000 point mark. And to be disappointed when he was told it’s not happening.

But likewise it’s totally reasonable and understandable for the management and ownership of a bottom-feeding team to no longer want to be a bottom-feeding team. And to conclude that one of the ways they can help get towards that goal was to part ways with the 40 year-old player that looked completely toast the previous year, but who still expected 1st/2nd line minutes and power-play time.

And again, how exactly could Chayka have personally handled it better? Ownership tells him not to bring back Doan, so he invites him to sit down face-to-face and breaks the news to him in person. Not really sure what else a GM can do to handle that more respectfully.

Also, we Leaf fans have seen in person how completely self-absorbed, selfish and toxic these old players can get when they’re basically only still playing in order to hit a personal milestone.

Patty Marleau dragging his ass around and insisting he still play every night—all for the sake of his precious consecutive-games streak—was some truly pathetic stuff and extremely detrimental to the team at the time.

I think Chayka would have been happy to keep Doan around if the owners had been willing to spend more than the cap floor.
