GDT #52: 2024/02/15 - oh no we're healthy again

Man Bertuzzi is snake bitten. When Tre signed him I was expecting him to be a monster for us, he has been just awful.

Yeah, I won’t lie, I thought that was a great signing. And also thought he’d have a monster year on either our first or second line.

But just a complete dud in every way. Didn’t mesh with Marner or Matthews at all, doesn’t create havoc in front of the net and can’t put the puck into the net to save his life.

If we need extra cap space, he should be a definite candidate to get dumped.

eh, Bert has been pretty obviously unlucky and snakebit. I'd rather his regression come in blue and white than elsewhere.

This isn’t really a worry for me, since I reject out-of-hand any nerd stats that claim that Bertuzzi is actually playing well but is just incredibly unlucky, and is thus due for an inevitable regression.

Still, I wouldn’t dump him just for the sake of dumping him. Only if clearing his cap space is a necessary part of making a deal that improves the team.

Otherwise, sure, keep him on in the faint hope he remembers how to score before we let him walk in the off-season.

yeah my eye test matches the nerdies though for Bert.

basically every line he's been on has been our best at controlling play. there's real value in that.

he's the best forward in terms of goals against this year. that's not a nerd stat.

and that's even though he's played with tavares and nylander most of the year, neither of whom ranks well there.

Pretty sure he isn’t being paid $5.5M to just not get scored against.

Put the puck in the net or IDGAF.

Forward Blocked Shots since Matthews entered the league:

1. Bonino 639
2. Jenner 539
3. Glendending 529
4. Matthews 502
5. Kopitar 483

and Matthews hasn't had the benefit of regular PK time where these others get most of their blocks.
