GDT #66: 2025/03/15 - baby bro growing up

Leafs finally get the top line out there after a 4th line shift and get possession but benoit had decided to stay out long and fucks up the bluelone pass for the turnover.

He's good enough to score from almost wherever you put him, which can lull a coaching staff into a false sense of security, but the dude has the best goal scoring hands on the planet (when healthy) and I see all of these slot and net front scrambles when we need a goal and Matthews is at the bottom of the right circle. Dude can do everything a low slot scorer does, at an elite level and we leave him out on the flanks the entire time.
 
Wonder if the crowd turns on our coach - will GM cave and make a late season change. Prob the last hope aside from Hasek level goaltending
 
They can’t win pucks on dump ins, can’t sustain offensive zone pressure and have huge gaping holes in the neutral zone defending the transition.

The players deserve some blame here but they’re not well coached I don’t see how that’s even debatable at this point.
 
Even aside from the losing lately, goddamn is this team just absolute garbage to watch.

I'm finding it harder and harder lately to bring myself to sit down and watch their games, even if I have nothing else better to do.
 
The Leafs are now 31st with a 43% xGF since the 4 nations over 11 gp.

This is probably their worst stretch of the core 4 era. For comparison they had 45% xGF in the last 11 games of the Babcock era.

If there is actually any accountability in the organization they gotta make a coaching change. This should be unacceptable.
 
Coaching may be one thing but does the coach have to inspire effort? These are professional athletes who should be hard wired to give their all each and every time, why else pay them stupid amounts of money? This is a game they've chosen to play as a livelihood and should be playing it with all their hearts. Instead they seem more interested in living the pampered lifestyle and that just showing up to the arena meets their contractual agreement? They are capable of being better as is usually demonstrated in the last few minutes of games where they are losing...but then again thats usually 6 on 5....so maybe they just aren't that good...period??
 
Noticed Ottawa is 4 points back. Will be interesting to see what the brass does about it. My guess is absolutely nothing at this stage of the season. Likely summertime moves.

I don't see them firing Berube though.

The Core 4 are on their 3rd or 4th coach and in the near decade of their existence they have manged precisely one series win (and they barely won that one)

Maybe the needed change is not behind the bench but within the Core 4 itself, hmmm?

New president likely happens this offseason.

But it could be a good thing if the Leafs could somehow fall to Washington in round 1. Go to the other side of the bracket. Likely a better chance to do damage.

Also, finishing in the second wild card ans getting eliminated quickly has to be the end of shanny plan et all.
