This playoff format is brutal. It's not about the Leafs, it's the fact it's so bad for the NHL. You should never know your playoff opponent by November.
Some big names have complained on camera, but I'm sure behind the scenes there's a lot of bitching about it.
Despite Gary's lies, the format was to save and make $ and it's doing the opposite. He's an idiot.

he is an idiot who has greatly enriched the 31 white men (and Melnyk women) who own hockey franchises

People always say this, and while true, NHL is adding less increases of revenues than every other major sport and MLS, which didn't even exist when Gary became commish is on it's way to passing NHL.
And are Melnyk's daughters single? Just inquiring.

ultimately the owners keep getting (significantly) richer, so they're happy with Gary. franchise values have fucking exploded during his reign. by all metrics that the owners care about, I think he's been a success. as a fan, sure, he's fucking hateable as hell. but fans don't really pay his salary, nor does he care what we think so long as the elite 32 are happy.

they've always been the little bro of the big four leagues so nothing has changed in that respect.

I grew up with this playoffs format, but without the wildcard stuff.

Gary took over and changed it to 1-8 in each conference.

Everyone bitched and complained about how stupid Gary was until they switched it back.

I loved the format due to the Norris division. Leafs could finish 20th out of 21 teams and make the playoffs.
There was no reason to change it to this current format. no one was complaining. He's also not being honest as to why it was changed. When Sidney Crosby gives his opinion once in his life I listen.
