GDT - Auston vs. his hometown team | 7:30PM EST SNET

1. Nylander is better than Galchenyuk
2. Our defense corps is actually pretty good. Rielly, Gardiner, Zaitsev is actually a very good and talented top 3. The bottom 3 slots aren't great but no worse than most teams.

We play a very high tempo high event system, and literally half of our forwards are rookies - the dmen are probably getting undeserved blame for our goals against totals.

their d is below avg and the advance #s spell that out.

Nylander not being a "Shanahan guy" is pretty funny. Shanahan has said many times the Leafs are looking for high possession players. Add Willy's high end skill to his abilities to retrieve and hang onto the puck makes him exactly the guy Shanny wants.

ya it's all bullshit.

they wouldn't take a guy who 'isn't a shanahn guy' in the top 10 of the draft. that's

Think our D needs a big addition so that people are slotted more appropriately. Look for another top 4 guy, move Carrick to a 5/6, hope for Nielsen/Dermott to develop.

Right now I think they're below average.

defense is a team thing, not just a dman thing.

the advanced stats spell out that we play thr highest event system in the league.

yes, it is a team thing.

but their d isn' very good. except in zeke land.

rielly jake and zaitsev are all very good and talented dmen. the bottom guys are typical bottom guys. it's not a bad dcorps.

the advanced stats will back me up on this.

Yeah, but we have an elite coaching helping our cause. We do need to upgrade that D to take the next step. The talent is not there. We really need to add another legit top-pairing guy. No need to rush it though. But we will have to compete for a cup.

meh

i wouldn't deal him for a guy hiting his mid 30s like keith but if you can get an in his prime top paiirng dman for nylander you'd have to do it.

we could be awaiting 8 or 9 years before the likes of dermott or nielsen really hit their stride.

obviously, i'd prefer not to trade nlyande,r but if he's the price to pay for a top nothc dman you do it.
I guess my question would be, what ages would you consider "in his prime"?

There's also the fact that William Nylander is literally the first player selected after Shanahan took over the team.

Yeah. This is more or less my take on it as well. I think Rielly is an average to slightly below average #1 right now, Zaitsev and Gardiner both low end #2's in quality. Carrick a decent #4, Hunwick a decent #6 and Polak a ****ing scrub. You add in another Zaitsev/Gardiner to our group and everything slots in a lot nicer. Carrick-Hunwick would probably be a pretty strong 3rd pairing.

If a seth Jones type deal presents itself then you consider it for Nylander but other than that you happily hold onto the player.

do teams that build around stacked dcorps win cups?

Well...if you look really hard...

Nope, still nope.

With that said...Anaheim. So if we can get 2 of the top 5 defenders on the planet together on our blueline at the same time, maybe we can Anaheim.

Reilly has been awesome this year, and Zaitsev looks real good on that pairing. Sure if you can get an elite defensemen then you can blow your load.

But I think they need more of a solid 2nd pair guy like Hjalmarsson/Stralman to play with Gardiner than a legit top pairing guy. I'd gladly take a guy Doughty, Karlsson or Hedman, but I don't see how that happens.

That deal is looking great for Columbus right now. Jonannson has been complete shit in Nashville. Tortorella was right.

+1

We "need" our Hjalmarsson....and if we can get him with the movable assets we have (JVR, Bozak, Komarov, etc), then ****ing fantastic. If not, show patience and wait for our cap situation to clear up some more (we still have a lot of veteran crap clogging up cap space) and wait for Hunter's drafts to fill in some more spots. There are a lot of teams sitting still until after the expansion draft as well, I expect us to be pretty active after that's done.

Seems like everyone who goes to Nashville kinda dies.

As for our D, we need to also keep in focus that we need our dmen to provide offense too. Right now, Rielly and Gardiner are really the only ones consistently capable, even though Babs has this insane philosophy of not using Rielly on the PP, and having Hunlak on the ice whenever Matthews is on. Zaitsev looks like he will be once he gets settled, but not quite yet. We need more offense from the backend. And really this gets solved by adding one guy. Even if it's say, Shattenkirk, though I wouldn't really want him. Having another 15-20 point guy right now, pushing Carrick to the bottom pair, and pushing Polak off a cliff, would make a pretty big difference.
