Preview: Buffalo at Montreal
7:30 PM ET, Thursday, March 10, 2016
Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec

Barring a miraculous closing run down the stretch, the Montreal Canadiens will be spectators once the playoffs come around, but at least the team has managed to regain some of its mojo at home. The Canadiens look to continue their recent hot stretch at the Bell Centre when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

Montreal, which is seven points out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, returned from an ugly 0-3-1 road trip by skating to a 4-3 overtime victory over Dallas on Tuesday night. The victory boosted the Canadiens' record to 6-0-1 in their last seven home games, but they have had their issues against the Sabres. Buffalo beat Montreal twice in a 10-day span last month and has won five of the last six matchups, including its last three trips to the Bell Centre. The Sabres had a four-game point streak halted in Tuesday's 4-2 home loss to the New York Rangers.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, MSG Buffalo, RDS, Sportsnet (Montreal)

ABOUT THE SABRES (27-32-9): Buffalo rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Toronto in a shootout Monday, but was unable to dig itself from three goals down against the Rangers, failing to score in the first period for the 24th time in 35 home games. “We’re a confident group in the fact we know we’re not out of a game,” Sabres captain Brian Gionta said. “But when things aren’t going our way and we lose some momentum, we have to stop that quicker." Goaltender Robin Lehner was unhappy after he was yanked early in the second period Tuesday, but coach Dan Bylsma said he will start versus Montreal.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (31-30-6): Alex Galchenyuk is on a white-hot goal-scoring spree, notching the overtime game-winning tally as part of yet another two-goal night in Tuesday's victory. Galchenyuk has pumped in nine goals in the past seven games - scoring twice in four of them - to increase his career-high total to 23. “The way he was at the beginning of the season and the way he is right now - he’s a completely different player,” Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said. "In the past, he had nice two- or three-game stretches. This last month, he's been able to maintain a high standard of play."

OVERTIME

1. Galchenyuk scored two goals in Montreal's two losses to Buffalo last month.

2. Sabres F Johan Larsson has scored three times in the past four games.

3. The Canadiens are 0-for-16 on the power play over the past six games.

Trends

Sabres are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings in Montreal.
Sabres are 15-37 in their last 52 in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.
Canadiens are 0-6 in their last 6 Thursday games.

I don't know about the rest of you, but at least the much anticipated great play of young Galchenyuk over the past few weeks, helps lessen the swelling from the beatings we've taken during this crappin' season.

and tank nation mourns...

He is amazing to watch play......I was sitting there at the Bell, and watching him live it's crazy how fast he skates up the ice....no one can catch him. His wingers (Max) need to adjust to him, not the opposite. Max needs to start crashing and banging a bit more to make space for Chuckie (yes I know, Max isn't that type of player)

Good luck to the Habs tonight but I am hoping the Sabres keep up their dominance of the Habs at the Bell Centre! Go Sabres!

well if 27 were to have a 2 pt night and your Sabres left the building with 2 pts of their own....I'd say we got the better of ya.

lucky you, I imagine he must be keeping you at the Bell until closing time.

I bet he is a treat to see live though. Been shooting more also and it's paying off.

In the postgame interviews, the media was asking Chuckie and Max about the rumours that they didn't like to play toghether....and you could understand from Chuckie's answers that it was an issue the first time Therrien put them together earlier in the season. That's when Max said to the media that he doesn't like that Chuckie held on to the puck too much.

TSN guys even were saying that it's a question of time before Max starts complaining again, since Chuckie is scoring so much, and that takes away goals from Max.....it's gonna be fun to see when they go 1-2 games without producing....gonna be fun

Why do you put so much stock into what the TSN guys say? Most on-air people in sports media are dumb.

That is some of the crap that keeps free agents away from Montreal. Why is it a news story. It's something team mates work out to get chemistry. Go to other teams, its not on the mainstream media

I can see him whining....I started to look at Max a little differently after he started touting his little buddy as his center. :nono:

I don't think I've ever been this bored watching the Habs

At least in the Cunneyworth days we could cheer for a real tank
