GDT: Canes at Kraken, 10PM Eastern, 10/17/22

That was a pretty comprehensive butt kicking for the second game in a row. The first against a straight up bad team that was trying hard and the second against whatever Seattle is trying to be. For the record, I have no idea what that is. Either they just had a really bad night or their attention to detail has deteriorated dramatically. We really learned nothing about this Canes team last night, because other than eventually getting embarrassed and getting a little dirty, Seattle didn't show up for a pro game. I know one thing ... that was no way to prepare to go play a couple of teams that will score 10 on you if you aren't ready to play big boy hockey.

Jarvis only had around 13min TOI last night, I'm sure that high hit took some wind out of his sails; can't believe that wasn't a call. The 2nd line is outplaying the 1st imho, they were all over the place last night in a good way. I'm a big fan of Chatfields watching him last year, and he's continued to show good judgement and his quickness through the first 3, very happy here.
Jarvis played more in the 3rd than in the first or 2nd. He played the same number of shifts as Aho and Turbo in the 3rd but about 1 minute more than either. So I’m not sure it was related to the hit.

Well I have Spectrum.. the first (away) game wasn't great in quality but the Seattle game was fine.
Looked sort of like 720 upscaled.. sometimes worse..

With all the coaches available to him, Francis chose Hakstol. He waited until the end of June to make the hire too, instead of hiring someone immediately after making their last payment to the league in April. And then handed him that roster.

Walt Ruff captured the problem with Seattle perfectly, in this video of Martinook’s goal. How can they let 2 ham and eggers like Marty and Noesen behind the entire defense? The Kraken had Burakovsky, Beniers, Eberle, Larsson and Dunn on the ice. Eberle is standing still in the circle, Dunn is at least engaged with Stepan at the hash marks. But Larsson lost a battle to Marty and Beniers whiffed on an attempt to clear the puck, but was late covering Noesen down low. Just brutal team defense.

Yeah, Seattle is built sort of upside down right from the foundations. That ridiculous expenditure on the broadcasting crew is at least partially defensible since they apparently don't plan on giving them a watchable team until they grow one organically ... for whatever reason. They squandered the expansion draft almost entirely, choosing almost entirely one dimensional players of all stripes. They didn't commit to proven vets, or promising youth, or anything in specific other than taking a bunch of guys who were good to decent at just one thing ... in a league that is rapidly moving away from specialized roles and towards dynamic, deep rosters filled with guys who can multitask. And then Ronnie choses a coach who's a systems nerd. Hakstol proceeds to drill his first team towards the modern player usage, concentrating on controlling flow and possession ... with a team filled with guys who really aren't equipped for it. Again, it's all upside down. He's got the perfect AHL coach to build system knowledge and depth running the NHL team. And then when it came time to "weaponize his cap space," Ronnie burns most of it on yet more specialist players like Burakovsky and extensions. Look, at least Burakovshy is at least good at the one thing he does well and Francis has largely drafted modern style players like Beniers and Wright. Gourde was a good get as well. But look at their long term commitments to one trick ponies like McCann, Schwartz, Tanev, Bjorkstrand and Oleksiak. I mean, just what is he building towards? He's got well over half his cap space for 24-25 tied up with a core that's gonna look a heck of a lot like what he has now. Even if Wright and Beniers pop off, by the time you pay them you won't have the room to add dynamic parts around them. None of it makes any sense, unless being not fun to play against was somehow the goal. Congrats on that, I guess.

Shane Weight has played 2 of their 4 games and is averaging 6:32 ice time, none on the PP. Smells like he’s headed back to Kingston.

Yeah, that's not the hardest high hit in the world, but it was completely unnecessary. He has the entire upper body to hit there and time to target something other than the kid's head. Make your hit, but respect the opponent enough to avoid the head.

Again ... why? You aren't going anywhere with this team, and you need Wright and Beniers to grow into NHL contributors sooner rather than later. Unless he's doing damage to himself, let him learn the NHL game on your trash panda of a team.

So. Jarvis takes a hit like that. Should there have been a response from the team. Seems like a penalty was warranted. Game was close so taking a penalty might have been bad. It looks much mor egregious in slow mo than real time but still -that’s an easy targeting call and ejection in football.
