We get our first look at Lack, Hanafin and some others. Nice to have hockey back.
Go Canes

September is flying by

Yeah it is. It's less than three weeks from the home opener.

BTW ... time for my annual pre season reality check PSA. Please don't watch these exhibition games after a big fat ONE day of practice and assign too much value to anything either positive or negative. I have no idea what clubs think they're gaining by plowing straight from physicals to ex games, but there have already been three or four in the books. Bottom line ... these games don't count and we have no idea what is even expected on the prospects playing in them. The vets? Whatever ... you just hope they play their way into form after a couple of weeks.

So. There's that.

Why not grab some cash by charging folks to come out and see these glorified scrimmages? I suspect that is all NHL clubs are thinking by treating these as if they were real games of any sort.

I still get a kick out of teams (probably all of them) that are out there selling tickets for these games at full regular season prices. I have 2 freebies in section 114 for the Sept 30th game vs. the Caps next Wednesday from the promotion the Eye was running. I need 3 tickets but I'm sure as heck not spending over $100 to get one lower level North ticket in that same section as my freebies. I'm assuming I can snag a 300 level ticket off stubhub for less than $10 and go find somewhere to sit near my freeblies without much issue?

I think they only do that to justify the time honored tradition of sticking your season ticket holders up for 2-3 ex games at full price. It's a horse crap way to do business.

Only baseball gets it right in North America IMO. Spring tickets are dirt cheap and they ought to be. They don't even bother with the tippy top high end facilities in Arizona or Florida either, although they are trending towards slicker small stadiums these days. So what would it hurt for the Canes and Caps to play at Washington's practice facility today? Nobody wants to watch this crap anyway and the only real good to be gained is playing against live competition. So go do that ... just don't charge people to watch it.

Go Canes

I believe it was a meaningless pre-season game last year vs Buffalo where Jordan broke his leg and pretty much ended the Canes chances of success for the year. I guess that old cliché "go break a leg" should not be used for the Canes this year in these pre-season tilts.

From Michael Smith, Canes forward lines for tonight's scrimmage (my sentiments exactly about the above "full-price-when-home-but-good-luck-finding-a-jumbotron-feed-when-away" pre-season money-grab games):

E. Staal/ J. Staal / Versteeg
Di Giuseppe / Ryan / Tolchinsky
Malone / Nash / Nestrasil
Sandlak / Sutter / Boychuk

Game-group defenseman pairings at practice:

Hainsey / Biega
Fleury / Murphy
Lowe / Pesce

Faulk and Liles are in this practice group, but not playing tonight per Chip.

Goalies:

Lack / MacIntyre

Fleury/Murphy should be good for at least a pair of goals against.

There are minimums on the number of 'legit NHL' players that must be suited up for each exhibition game. The Canes have 9 by my count without including the goalies so we are doing the Caps a favor tonight.

CBA 15.4:

15.4 Exhibition Games.

(c) A Club shall be permitted to dress a minimum of eight (8) veterans for any Exhibition Game. For purposes of this Section 15.4(c), a veteran shall constitute either:

(1) a forward or defenseman who played in thirty (30) NHL Games during the previous season,

(2) a goaltender who either dressed in fifty (50) or more NHL Games or played in thirty (30) or more NHL Games in the previous season,

(3) a first round draft choice from the most recent year's Entry Draft, or

(4) any Player who has played one-hundred (100) or more career NHL Games.

No Hanafin?

Presumably tomorrow night against the Pens...where he will count against the minimum-8-veteran-players rule cmaleski2 mentioned above as a first-round pick from the most recent draft.

Blacked out in our area.

FoxSports or SportsSouth rights...vague wave of the hand...or something like that.

Way to raise expectations and disappoint, Canes. Practice, I suppose.

Game over. The canes looked like last years canes and the year before...,...
Out skated, out hustled, out played, out thought, out everythinged.
