The Canes make their first trip to Canada since the 2019 Playoffs.

RBA made line changes in the Nashville game and then shuffled them again at practice on Monday. They stuck all week, so it looks like we’ll have an all-Finn top line and Svech and Necas on Trocheck’s wings. Staal’s line was unchanged and Jarvis rotated in with Stepan’s line. No changes to the defense pairings.

The Habs are tied with Svech with 3 goals. They've allowed 15 for a league worst -12 goal differential. They’re coming off a 5-0 shutout at the hands of the Sharks. Jonathan Drouin has 2 goals, Chris Wideman has the other. Brett Kulak has 2 assists, no one else has more than 1. Jake Allen started the first 3 games in goal and gave up 9 goals on 78 shots. Sam Montembeault started on Tuesday and gave up 5 on 36 shots. Their penalty kill is bad, allowing 7 goals on 17 times short handed. The 17 times short handed is behind only Florida and Anaheim, the 7 goals allowed is tied with Winnipeg for worst in the league.

Weird to have that long break right as the season was getting started for Carolina. Pretty sure that's going to show on the ice, too. Montreal may be playing badly, but they've actually been playing. Carolina has been sitting around the WCC working on special teams and getting Burniston's undivided attention for 4 straight days.

And look ... Montreal has been terrible so far, but if you think the Canes are getting anything other than the best shot they can muster tonight, you're nuts. Add in that everybody in that franchise feels like they're playing for their jobs at this point and this likely will be a dire affair. Like Last Days of Chairman Mo level dire.

Good points. Probably not ideal but on the positive side the break after 2 could be a benefit. It let them see what they needed work on and gave time to work on it.

The Canes are only 2 for 9 on the PP, tonight would be a good time bust out against a team that’s taken a lot of penalties and is bad on the PK so far.

For those who subscribe to The Athletic, Habs beat writer Arpon Basu has an article on KK today. He knows what kind of reaction he’s going to get.

One other note in the article. Aho has a sauna in his back yard. It doesn’t get more Finnish than that.

Tonight’s officials:

Referees:
Ghislain Hebert #22, Jake Brenk #26

Linesmen;
Travis Toomey #90, Jonny Murray #95

There are a lot of refs that we rag on for various reasons and Hebert has flown under the radar. He’s worked over 700 regular season games and his skates have never touched playoff ice. Tonight is Brenk’s 300th game and he’s never worked the playoffs either.

Yes but then we'd spend all our time ragging on terrible refs. At this point we should just point out the better ones

Walt Ruff predicts Andersen in goal tonight. With games Saturday and Monday, we might not see Raanta until the back to back next Thursday/Friday. And that kicks off 3 games in 4 nights, so he probably goes Friday against Chicago.

Given the way he played in pre season, it's probably better than Rannta get all the work he can In practice before he plays in a game that matters.

Looking forward to a tougher game tonight than the W/L records will show. The Canes are likely to come out slow with the long break, but I think having KK on the top line will help motivate those guys to keep their feet moving. I think KK and Svech both come up big tonight, Svech is playing with a chip on his shoulder (in a good way) and that will hopefully continue. Let's do that hockey.

TDA to the box for possibly a goal saving slash, Drouin evens it up 3 seconds in by hooking Bear. And the Svech to the box for a slash so the Habs have a 4 on 3.

And the Bally feed sucks on ice.

Last sentence truth. No trouble until tonight but this is painful.
