GDT: Canes @ Habs 2/25 7:00

FWIW, Rantanen is seeing this team pretty much at their worst; not playing their game, not scoring, not hitting, not even making good passes.

Maybe he does run like hell, and I wouldn't blame him one bit.
Well he’s certainly not the making them any better so some of that is on him. The perception would be that we were better with Necas. I think that’s a coincidence of the timing of this present funk but a guy who thinks he’s worth $112,000,000.00 ought to be able to pick things up too right?

He's been pretty bad and if he doesn't see that for what it is then God help us all long term. The fit just seems off, is that because he has no center here to play with that comes close to what he was used to with McKinnon? Is it the left shot vs right shot center debate? Is it the system taking too long to adjust for him? So many questions and not enough answers but he certainly has not lived up to the fanfare so far and it's starting to look worse not better for the eye test as we go along. It certainly has not helped that this team has looked awful as a whole for quite some time, one guy is not going to save that fact.

The Canes seem one center short in everything they do of late, Roslovic is brutal trying to play there, KK is his usual inconsistent self, and expecting Aho to be the savior is asking too much.

My captain obvious comment; this team might limp into the playoffs but is going nowhere fast unless we can at least stop the bleeding with a decent 2C. Damn frustrating to watch. I’m sure the mgmt is loving this latest crapfest given those playoff ticket requests and STH renewals are likely teed up for distribution.

I thought the off season moves this summer was mere tinkering around the edges. Nothing to really make us better, but an effort at shoring up some gaps. I know I got 💩 from my circle of hockey buds for calling it a JR tweak from back in the day. After the TO and MTL games and the team’s inconsistency, I’m not so sure I was wrong.

Now, decades of following this team under Karmanos and JR may have left me scarred and I may be underestimating Dundon, RBA and GMET, but JR and PK are my default setting. If anyone wants to walk me back from the edge, please do.

They were replacing people that moved on. It accomplished that. Better? Only if Svetch, Necas and KK blossomed. Necas did. The others have been ok at best. But they were a pretty good team last season.

The team we’ve seen since thanksgiving is much worse than the sum of the parts. We KNOW they are capable of being a very solid team. We’ve seen that. But they aren’t doing it. Sure we need a 2C. Sure our goaltending could be/needs to be better. But this these players are massively underperforming.

Why?

This! Our best players (with a few exceptions) aren't performing at an acceptable level. The flow and execution from this team isn't what it was early in the year and we're still in a mediocre-at-best funk. We've all seen what they're capable of when it's all working, but it isn't working right now.

They’re failing the basics, skating, stick handling, passing and catching. Then add on being in the correct position for both defense and offense, judgement, anticipation, etc.

The biggest issues for me on the year in review so far:

Svech...inconsistency is his middle name, one step forward and two steps back. That salary and that draft slot says you need to do much more.

KK...never has come close to the expectations thrust upon him and nothing but bottom six fodder for the most part. They bet on him and lost.

Orlov...a disaster of a season overall, overpaid and perhaps even over-slotted in that second pair, maybe his third pair assignment last year was where he belonged...that's one helluva expensive third pairing D though.

Burns...Father Time has come calling, no shame in an almost 40 year old guy reaching the end of the line in a young man's league unless you are being asked to shoulder first pair minutes most nights.

Freddy...The Canes should have cut the cord last summer, injury prone and that body is somewhat battered, there was a better way to approach the goaltending last off season with a smart trade, two years straight where this team scrambled for several months to replace him in the lineup when he went down to injury.

Who is over performing though. Nobody aside from rookies and grinders. Yes those guys are underperforming.

At some point it’s either a character problem or lack of sufficient talent problem for all of our non grinders. Or it’s not the players.

Like dwind said. It’s basics that they’re failing at. We know they have the ability to do that stuff at a very high level but they’re not. Why? It’s not like they’re running into better teams. They give the other team time and space and they don’t make their own time and space. They make the opponents look better than they are. Tripp can prattle on and on about how well Montreal was executing and how we lost the goalie battle but a better team imposes their will on the game. We didn’t look like the better team out there last night and honestly we usually haven’t since early this season.

Is that because he’s being told he needs to be more like Jordo and Martinook?
I think he's got a lot of natural skill and talent but is lacking the IQ to put it all together. He's not worth what he's being paid, and he'd never be chosen 2nd overall if you ran that draft back now. Hindsight can be 20/20. But he's just not a great player.

At this point RBA needs to be running basic passing and skating drills, and going over positioning. They're doing the most fundamental of things poorly.

Receiving is a little more than just the ability to catch a puck on your stick. When your team has the puck(this the style of play) you want to be skating to an area that WILL have a clear path from the puck carrier to you. Anticipation is the opposite when you’re on defense you want to anticipate where your man is going to go to get in that clear area. Note that a lot of teams try to surround the puck carrier and block off all possible paths of a pass.
