GDT: Canes @ Kraken 10/19 10:00

This entire start has just been strange and obviously completely unexpected. I know it's just 5 games in, but watching inferior teams completely have their way with us if the offensive zone? What the heck are we doing out there?

Orlov is an NHL worst -10 through 5 games. And a fair amount of that is on him. 2 of those minuses are SHGs directly a result of his flubs on the PP. He has been brutally bad out there, making bad decisions all over the ice in all situations.

Hopefully this all is a distant memory and we are rolling the way we usually do come Nov/Dec, but wow, this has been quite a shock to the system. Thankfully we are scoring a lot of goals, but a lot of that has been the opposition. Colorado is going to destroy us if we play this loose in couple of days.
Our team is broken. For now at least. And here come the Avs tomorrow.

The defense and goaltending is pretty much hot garbage all season so far, yeah you can also pin some of the defensive breakdowns on forwards not doing their job without the puck but in a nutshell this team is built on stifling D that usually gives the opposition fits trying to score goals and run up the scoreboard. I know Raanta is a slow starter but this league is not built to have your own goalie give up big leads early and constantly fight back late, clean that up too. The state fair road trip crap gets old at times, teams shouldn’t have to start seven of their first eight games on the road every freaking season.

Agree with the above comments about this team's poor start and would add our PK has looked just as bad.

Yeah ... at least they're scoring some goals. Usually when the Canes hit a rough patch it's because their offense gets blunt at the point of attack and every freaking goalie turns into a brick wall. Knowing Brind'Amour, the repairs will start with the d zone and work out.

How much of it is due to the 11/7 configuration? I know the last 2 games were necessitated by Aho’s injury, but it wasn’t in the other 2 games he’s used it. I think it might contribute a little to Orlov’s struggles, he’s trying to learn a system that has taken others a while to get comfortable in and he doesn’t have a consistent partner to learn it with. But…his bad decision making on the PP can’t be laid at that particular doorstep.

Orlov is likely to continue to struggle unless they go 12/6 and he can get comfortable with someone.

I don't think a single even strength shift Orlov takes with DeAngelo is helping anybody in any way right now. I get what they're doing with Tony, but getting Orlov integrated is WAY more important in the grand scheme. And if they can't get that third pairing sorted then they're just asking too much of the goalies.

Personally, I'd bench DeAngelo and play 12 forwards until things get settled down a bit. Then you can start mixing him back in. I honestly don't think you can keep using them both until Orlov gets his feet under himself in this system. I mean, you can ... but the results are gonna be all over the place and that will eventually stress out other areas of the team game.
