It’s been so long since I did one of these, I almost forgot. And Happy David Ayres Day to all who celebrate.

The Canes get back at it with 2 games north of the border. As a reminder, they’re 6-3-1 in the last 10 and coming off a 7-3 win over Utah the last time out. The boys that played in the tournament came away with mixed results. Finland didn’t win a game in regulation, Rantanen had a goal, Aho had 2 assists. Jarvis was held off the scoresheet but came home with a gold medal. Slavin came home with a silver and showed the rest of the world what we see every game. The latter 2 didn’t practice yesterday but RBA expects them tonight. Tyson Jost is back and centered the 4th line in practice. Kochetkov was listed first on Walt Ruff’s practice lines yesterday but we’ll see who plays where at the morning skate.

The Leafs are 6-4 in their last 10 and lost to Vancouver their last time out, which broke a 3 game winning streak. They have 68 points and are 2nd in the Atlantic, 3 points behind Florida with 2 games in hand, 2 points ahead of Tampa. They had 3 players in the tournament, Mitch Marner had a goal, the OT winner against Sweden and 2 assists. Auston Matthews had 3 assists and showed off a 200‘ game. William Nylander had 2 assists. Nylander leads with 33 goals, Marner has 55 assists, tied for 3rd in the league, his 71 points are tied for 4th. Marner, Matthews and Nylander all average at least a point per game, Tavares is just under. In goal, Joseph Woll has started 29 games, he’s 2.65/.909. Anthony Stolarz returned just before the break from a knee injury that kept him out for 6 weeks. He’s started 18 games and is at 2.08/.929. It will be interesting to see what they do in goal the rest of the season. The Leafs are 12th in goals and goals against per game. They’re 12th on the PP and 13th on the PK.

NHL Network and FanDuel for TV.

Jarvy had an assist on Canada's second goal vs Sweden in the first game. Poor Jarvy, how quickly Andy forgets about him.

Yeah, I suck. It’s probably recency bias, I just remember him being abused by Slavin.

If you're a glass half full person, you can make a reasonable case that all of Carolina's guys acquitted themselves well at 4 Nations. Jarvis was stuck in a 4th line role with one linemate who obviously couldn't keep up with the pace of play (the Rat) and thus the fact that he got on the scoresheet at all was a minor miracle. His underlying numbers were good. Rantanen played really well, although his recent shooting slump continued. Slavin was Slavin. Aho kind of stunk but his coach has been very public in admitting that he and Hintz were a terrible fit and should have been split up. So, you could grain of salt that one. Nobody got hurt and nobody embarrassed themselves.

None of it matters anyway. It's back to business as usual and with that long a break you can probably chuck all the pre-break team trends out the window. For these first couple of games everybody's going to be gutting it out either way, until the teams have a chance to settle back into their normal routines. For the Canes, it's probably good to get these first two out of their system on the road, where nobody's worried about style points. Just get back on the grind and see what you can get out of these two. 4 points would be ideal, but 3 would also be good and a split is fine.

Lines from the skate.

Again, I like that first line tweak. Plus, if they're a little leg weary after 4 Nations, it's all on that one line and Brindy can compensate a bit better. Interesting to see Kooch getting the nod coming off the break. I mean, he snapped the losing streak but that was a WHILE ago.

Jarvis wasn't glad to do the interview. I get it but after winning the 4 Nations... just sucked we don't even make good roadkill
